Hey, I've used the MXL 603s as overheads for drums and on accoustic guitar but have never put them on a tom. What do you guys think of this? Supposedly the 603s and the Mk-012 sound very similiar and I've heard the Mk-012 does wonders on toms. Anyway, haven't had a kit around to test it on so I was wondering about your guys' input.

i dont have any 603's but I have used them....I do have a pair of mk012's and to me there is no comparison.....I have never used my mk012's on toms either though I have also heard they do well...I dont trust drummers enough to keep the sticks away from them though...

I think you'll need a pad!!

Condensers can be quite good on toms, but they tend to overload pretty easy when close micing drums.

My thought exactly, and that includes myself! I've whacked my 57s a few times and am too cautious to try my 603s as tom mics. But I must say one of the best recordings of my drums was at Inner Ear Studios using small cap condensors on the toms. They sounded huge!

57's are more than good enough in my opinion...especially considering they're completely durable. That or the MD421...

But that's not what you asked....Yes the 603's will do the job. Will they do well? I have no clue. I like my 57's on toms well enough.

I enjoy my oktavas on toms. I really don't worry about them getting whacked, as they are fairly low profile. They come out a little more defined in the final mix without much tweaking... sometimes I roll off some of the lows, but nothing besides that. I definitely second the pad suggestion (err, requirement). Oktava's have the neat screw-on type, but you can pick up a couple of Shure A15AS's ($40 a piece, nice to have around).

Usually if I wonder about trying something out with a microphone that I actually do own, then I just go do it and forget about all the hassle that comes with having to go and post a forum topic about it.

Yeah, but then he would have had to come here and ask what he could do about the strange clipping sound he gets when he throws his 603's on top of his toms. It all works out in the end.

I just find it easier to post a topic then finding a drum set and then setting everything up. Anyway, thanks for comments, sounds like it work nicely.
