First of all, here's what I have at home to record:

Mic: Shure ksm-27
Soundcard: M-audio Delta 44

I also have a lil' mixer behringer mx602a... that I want to replace by a preamp & a compressor. By the way I use my "studio" to record vocals only.

I have a budget of 600$(us) for a preamp and a compressor.

What should I buy?

Edit:

My friend suggested this combinaison:

Preamp: TUBE ULTRAGAIN T1953
Compressor: Behringer T1952 Tube Composer

It fits my budget, and the Tubes will add warmth to my vocals!

Anything to suggest?

Be sure to investigate the Toft mic pre/EQ/compressor channel strip. It streets for around $600 (US) IIRC.
Website is www.studioprojectsusa.com
Will blow away anything by Behringer BTW.
(like comparing a Yugo vs. a Mercedes :D)

It may already be for sale at the www.mercenary.com website.
In any case, you can contact Fletcher at Mercenary Audio about it.
With few exceptions, no one has as much gear experise as he does that posts here, including myself! :)

Oops!
Forgive the bad grammar of the last post.

Much better at spelling than typing...

The RNP/RNC combo will run about $650. What a great deal!

I think the new Meek TwinQ will run about $700. I expect this to be a great deal as well.

That Toft peice will be in that Neighborhood, and the Peavey tube pre is up there.

I'd go for the RNC also. I've never heard the RNP but if it's like the RNC it will be great. I also have an M-audio DMP3 that I use a lot, even while having an avalon around.

jeremy...you have an Avalon and..

you have an Avalon and still can recommend the DPM3?!!
that's the kind of info. and reaasurance I like.\
I'm sick of trying crap out and returning it....
others expierience can help with some pre-elimination of equipment.
If I go by specs only...Radio Crapshack has the best mic's in the world!!!

I see the RNC and DPM3 mentioned as a great low-mid pair.
That's what I'll be working Overtime for this check......

Just finished doing the same shopping myself so I'll share my experience.

First of all I tried saving money. <As we all do at first>

I started with a Beringer mixer thinkin'I would use the pre's in that and software compression.
Then got a BLUETube for the pre and stayed with software compression.
Then tried an Alesis 3630 for compression, and then quickly went after the FMR RNC. <after all the feedback I got from this forum,THX GUYS!>
I was VERY happy and decided to give the FMR RNP a whirl. After I got 'em hooked up and compared the two pre's, I took the BLUETube back without question.

Now I have settled nicely into my FMR pair and have found myself going back and re-recording older parts of songs that I layed down with the other gear and compared apples to apples.

Thanks to the help of the guys here, there is a big difference. The noise level, clairity, and overall sound quality I am very happy with. I mean when my girlfriend can say, "What did you do different, I mean it sounds better but I'm not sure why." then you know you did something right.

Hope that helps!!
