Since it seems that the SM 57 is the unwritten industry standard in micing guitar cabs, would it be safe to say that using a Beta 57 would give the same results........only on steroids?

Thanks,
Rick

I've got both and personally I'd use a 57 for recording and a Beta 57 live.

As you can see, there are some definite differences in both the low and high frequency responses, so you can't exactly say the Beta would sound like the SM on steroids. Each mic lends a different character to the tone. But as was previously mentioned by someone else, I have been pretty happy with an SM in the studio and the Beta live.

Hey, thanks for the graphs.........who'd a thought - go to the munufacturers site! :)

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but are the dotted lines on the Beta 57's chart in reference to the proc. effect? And if so, wouldn't that in therory make the Beta have a better or more pronounced bottom end at closer range(s) like - inside of 6" (graph is showing 2" - 1/8" low end boost)????

Thanks,
Rick

You are correct that the dotted lines graph the proximity effect. However, the SM57 is also subject to proximity effect, they just didn't graph it. The SM would have a somewhat similar boost to the low end.
