57 in the kick

The other day i happend to walk into one of my collage studios to find some mates having a problem with getting the signal into the desk, some of the patching between the rooms in in need of re-doing. Anway, i ended up enginering there session, one of the probs they were having was the kick sounding very dull, they were using a d112, but the drum isnt the best. What ever we did we couldnt get it to cut through, this is quite heavy prog rock, with all the chainsaw guitar sounds goin on. I suggested throwing a 57 in the kick just to see what came out, not expecting to achive much. BINGO! job done - it got the 'thwack' we were looking for straight away.
Got to say i was shocked!

I recorded many songs with a 57 on the kick. I upgraded to a D112 and it was a singularly awesome experience. The kick requires no eq or treatment whatsoever when used with a heavy blanket tunnel.

But whatever works best for you is best... congratulations!!
 
No one mic does it everytime. I love a D-112 but it depends on the particular drum you're miking. Matching the source to the right mic for the job is the trick.
 
I get too much SPL when using a SM57 on the kick. The recording sounds like someone blowing air into the mic.
 
Try getting it back from the beater a bit.

I've had some good luck with a 57 on the kick.... my kick mic sucks and is just so muffled and boxy sounding that, while the 57 lacks the low end, it captures everything else with a much more true sound.
 
Also you might be overloading your preamp, as the 57 should be able to take some serious SPLs
