$500 to Spend on a Vocal Mic

+1. And yes, you'll probably keep it after you get the Mojave. I have a Joly-modded Oktava, and have used the Mojave. They're in the same ballpark, but in my opinion the Oktava is more focused.
 
Michael Jackson Thriller is probably the most famous example of the SM7 as a vocal mic. There is a really famous mixer/producer who uses it almost exclusively on kick too (can't remember the name).
 
ADK Tubes

After sitting in on a few sessions in Nashville with a couple of great engineer friends of mine, they kept telling me about ADK mics and how they are their secret weapons. (Ray Charles, Michael W. Smith, Manhattan Transfer,Lenny Kravitz, really good list of end users.) After doing a little digging around, I found a couple of their cheaper A-51 large diaphragms and they sounded good on lots of utility stuff, but they said that the silver bullet mic was the A-51 TT or the TC was good as well, but the TT was the best especially for male vocals. Over the last 2 years, I now own 1 A-51 TT and 2 A-51 TCs. GREAT mics! But I have to disagree about the TT on male vocals, I really like the TC better, but the TT really shines on acoustic guitar, really amazing. By the way, I got the TC mics on ebay for under $300 each, and the TT for right at $600. I talked to the president of ADK in the US, and he said that they are working on a $100 tube to replace the cheap $20 that are currently in them and will make your fantastic sounding mic into a stellar one.
I know I sound like I work for them, but I am just so glad I found these mics.
BTW, I feel the same about G&L guitars, I should be getting commission from these guys.
 
SM7 for harmonica/vocals?

I asked this question in another thread, but ran across you guys talking about he SM7, so I'll ask again...I'm also looking for a vocal mic, but I'm doing folk rather than rap. My voice is not very loud (more in the talkative folk style of Dylan or Prine) I play harmonica (hanging around my neck) inbetween verses of lyrics and so I need a mic that can pick up the nuances of my comparatively quiet vocals and be able to handle a blazing harmonica (it can get very loud). Would the SM7 still be a good choice here?

Not sure how important it is, but I am using a Roland VS2480 as my sole piece of recording equipment (just bought it used...haven't even turned it on yet!...because I don't have any mics!).
