one channel, no bells and whistles, to go with sm7b and baby bottle for hip hop/reggae music

what are some of the better ones in this range?

is there a sure-fire one, like the sm7 is a sure-fire mic?

Great River ME-1NV. Done.

Frank

Daking has a new solo pre out in that price range as well. Grace should be a consideration - the new M101 puts out 75db of gain (used to be a high power option - now standard) that should work well with an SM7. For that money you could also pick up a used lunch box and a used API, GR, A-Designs P1 or Avedis pre (among others). Then you would have the option of future expandibility.

Second vote for the Grace. Nice, quiet. No colorization!

No way...not for $1,000. $1,500 maybe.

Way. Used 6 slot API lunch boxes frequently go for @$325-350. The proliferation of pre modules seems to have driven down the price or at least kept it stable. Used API 512c units often go for @$600 (which is what I paid for mine). I bought a P1 module last year for $575. Purple Audio Biz units also go for @$600. I've seen used GR modules go for @$700. There's an Avedis module up on GS right now for $725. Along with an A-Designs two slot rack for another $235.

Here's a GR MP500NV for $675.

An API 6 slot lunchbox recently sold on GS for $335.

So, if you buy used, you should be able to pick up a rack and a single unit for around $1000. Maybe less.

Wow...I stand corrected. That's pretty sweet. I think I might know what I'm doing with my next $1,000.

Yeah, all the gear manufacturers jumped on the 500 format bandwagon over the last couple years, and now there's lots of stuff hitting the used market. You can now buy a used 6 slot lunchbox and a used (or possibly even a new) GR 500 series module for about the same or less than the stand alone single channel GR pre (remember that the GR module takes 2 slots though).

Ahh yes, a great time to be alive:D

I saw one selling for $1100 at sweetwater

what about a little cheaper than that?

put me down for a grace m101. incredible value. it's like a dmp3 on meth cooked by the dad from malcolm in the middle.

(sorry, if you don't watch 'breaking bad' this might not be as humorous as i intended it)

Get a brand new 6 space lunchbox at mercenary for $375, and an avedis ma5, and you'll thank me, because you'll have a killer vocal preamp, AND you'll have 5 empty slots the next time you want to get another pre, or comp. Don't take my word for it. Read the 14 pages of user reviews and comments here:

Disclaimer: I own an ma5, but have no financial, or contractual relationship with avedis or any outfit that sells avedis gear.

Holy crap...I had no idea that lunchboxes had gotten so cheap. $375 for six spaces including power supply? That's a no-brainer. I'd get that and a 512c. It'll be a little over your budget, but it'll worth it. Definitely better than a single ME-1NV just because it's much more flexible.

actually i don't see me spending that kind of money any time soon.

what's a lunchbox?
