424MKIII drive problem: I get a "jam"...

...sometimes after starting & stopping my Tascam. Immediately after loading a cassette the deck always operates correctly the first time - it's the subsequent actions that result in jams.

If I stop the tape after recording, more often than not when I go to restart (selecting either Play or Record & Play) the motor just groans against the tape, and neither reel turns. The motor continues to groan even if I hit the Stop button.

When that happen I just pop open the cassette cover, pull the tape out, stick it right back in, close the cover and it runs fine.

Any ideas?

Sorry if this sounds obvious, but are you sure that you're always pressing the cassette down all the way?
I've had my 424 for a while and have'nt ever had any problems with it.
If it keeps happening, you should probably ask Tascam about it. Their customer support seems pretty good.

Eon,

Yeah, I'm inserting the cassette all the way. Thanks for the tip though - maybe I'll try Tascam Product Support.

Yeah, I agree, that's a tough one.

It may be a good one for Tascam Service, especially if the 424 is still under warranty.

Anyway, it's really hard to tell. Make sure the head/carriage is engaging all the way up, to contact the pinch roller to the capstan.... the little rubber tire should contact the little spinning metal shaft deely.
