CHECK YOUR SYSTRAY
Check how many programs you maybe running at the same time. You could do this by pressing the keys:
CTRL+ALT+DEL at the same time.
Select and ENDTASK every program or process that you don't recognize and need. Remove any anti-virus program (as they check and analyze everything you try to save to hard drive), but leave EXPLORER and SYSTRAY alone.
After that, CLICK START, select RUN. When the window comes up, type MSCONFIG.
When the window comes up, select the STARTUP TAB. Uncheck every program you don't need. You will be surprised of the number of processes that runs in the background of your computer. These affect the speed of your program.
If you are afraid you might disable some programs that maybe necessary (like the ones your sound card needs) visit this site:
http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_index.htm
You checklist: If you have done all this but:
1. Defragged you hard disks
2. Ensured you have no virus in your system
3. Have disabled the anti-virus
4. No unnecessary programs running
5. No background tasks needed running
and your recording still skips - then it is time to
UPGRADE to WINDOWS XP.
Windows 98 and Me are a little slow on the Audio/Video side of recording. I hate windows XP, and I don't like recommending it because of it's monopolistic arrogance, but the fact of the matter is, it is superior when handling audio.
One caveat, I don't think Creative has published an updated driver for Sound Blaster live as of yet, so your sound card may not work with it for the time being. But at least it is not a major expense.
If you upgrade your sound card or bought a better sound card and it still skips - check the speed of your hard drive, is it ATA 100 with 7200 RPM, if not, your solution just got a little bit more expensive.
Still skipping?
IT IS THE ATHLON - get an INTEL ! Now that's expensive.
Hope that helps,
Tony A.
P.S.
Have you tried recording using a different software? It may just be that your software is the problem. Why not download n-track demo, it is free and has a proven track record.
