hey this is a track i recorded for a mates band - theyre all using my gear - kit etc etc. it took 3 hours - please dont listen to the vocals as they're awful - the singer is just ..........erugh. he was the worst type of singer you can get - holding the mic (MXL992) like a dynamic on stage. and he kept steppin back and dancing (badly) - i didnt have enough time to really do much to the vocal. im goin to get him to do it again. mixing involved setting levels and panning. o and a quick crecendo. which doesnt work. but the actual sound. drum sound any good? etc etc. any commments would be appreciated - it can only make me get better at what i do. :)
thanks guys.

The vocal room needs some padding. Too much room bounce back.

Bass is out of control around 100 to 150

The guitars are kind of all over the place I would not have spread them like that.

Good effort but its not going far with the room noise on the vocal. Cymbals are pretty indistinct.

Mmm.. I listened to it twice.
The snare sounds really weird, not good. It sounds like the drummer is hitting a carton box instead of a snare. The rimshots at the beginning start of pretty good. The guitar doesn't sound as if she's tuned properly.
There are some serious mixing issues too. The guitar sounds muddy at times. You should record the rhythm guitar twice and pan them hard left and hard right to get some space in the mix. The hard panning of solo (2:21) is kinda distracting.
I hope this helps..

yeh - thanks. it was a case of not really having any time to do anything. i recorded what they had. the guitar sounds out to me also but the guy had takesn 23 takes to get that 1st bit right - there was no way i was goin to ask him to do it again because of tuening. the vocals - not much i can really do - couldnt set up the booth in time - i stuck presets its done previously on it- it hasnt worked but thats all i got paied to do. i might mix it just to do it for them - as a fovor. but it depends on how much spare time i have. the snare wasnt tuned - had huge ringing - i didnt like it - that took a while for it to sound like that (couldnt retune it much as the head was completly shot). then the solo - unfortunalty again it was a time issue. i think i listened to the track maybe once fully. and mixed as i went along. then i literally chucked them out as i then had 15min to tidy up and pack stuff away for the next band. i charged them £20. previously they paid £200 of a demo in a studio. 6 hours recording. it sounded so bad. much worse than my quick attepmt. ill repost the mix in a dayor two once im remixed (well just mixed them really). I'll try the guitar panning idea also laynestaley. thanks - keep the comments coming.

The bass drum seems to be non-existent. I do like the sound of the ride cymbal. What kind is it, and how do you have it miked? I agree with Laynestaley that the snare sounds realy odd.

Believe it or not, I think that the singer has some potential. If he could refine himself, I think he could be good.

I don't know squat about recording like most guys here, so I am critiquing as an average joe.

sydfan - thanks for you comments- ive just mixed the song - 30min worth. ive sorted out the snare, i compressed the whole drum track and the threshold was set way to low. now its better. the singer is good - but he's hard to record. He does have a good voice - didnt come out well. im going ot get him to record it again. i'll inform you when the mixed version is up. btw laystaley i used your idea of hard panning the rhythm guitar. it works. thanks. i'll use that again.

heres the link http://www.belikedad.co.uk/5928354.htm but theres an issue with it. the quiet snare at the start - theres random sounds like hitting a bin lid. :S any ideas? thanks again for the comments. what does everyone think of this version. 30min mixing. it's all i would allow mysef to do - as that what extra anyway. i dont have much spare time. :(

Hey, this tune is kinda cool! I would suggest posting your raw tracks for us (or anyone willing) to remix the tune for ya. I bet I could even make the singer sound better and glue the song together! =)

rite if you'd want ot do that it appreiciate it. how would you suggest it post the tracks? should i use www.yousendit.com what is the usual routime fopr posting all the speerate tracks? thanks. eric

-watch the autotune on the vocals. you can really notice it at 00:14 on the word "my"

-at 00:41 you need a low cut/shelf on the clean guitars. the low end is a little too much.

-is the opening guitar out of tune? maybe it's just the twangy timbre

-are the distorted guitars recorded direct? kinda sound unnatural.

no autotune on it. lol. he flatly refused it. if u look up at the rest of the posts yes i htink it is out of tune. he took so many takes to get it - i didnt want to get him to do it again. the distorted guitars are going through his peavy. its a transistor amp and it sux. the distortion isnt nice. the other guitarist was using a mesa markIII. that was a nice amp. ill stickon a low cut - thanks for the advice.
