388 vs M216 preamps

Anyone have opinions as to on-board preamp characteristics/quality of a 388 vs. M216? How about those compared to a new Tascam portastudio's preamps? Or are all of these channel preamps equally not very awesome, all things considering?

The vintage stuff is going to murdelize the porta studios. Tascam preamps are probably some of the nicest solid state preamps you can get for a reasonable price. I've got an M-312 and with the pad off it's outstanding.
