Hey everyone-
I have had a 388 for about two years now (it was stored for the first few months, covered with doubled-up garbage bags). I have not tried to use it due to a lack of microphones and an overabundance of poverty (no money to replace the mics that walked off, and no time due to job searching/working). The person who had it before me says that he recorded on it with no problems, but when someone came over to look at it the other day (I'm moving, so I have been considering selling it), he couldn't get the tape to move. The machine powers up just fine (VU meters light up, gear hum audible), though the tape counter doesn't display anything. Does anyone out there have any idea what the problem might be? Could it be due to a simple lack of use (or extended storage time)? Is there some sort of storage protocol I should have followed (the original dustcover is long gone, so I tried to thoroughly tape the aforementioned bags-good or bad move?)? What about when starting up after an extended dormant spell?
If it does need repairs, could anyone provide me with a rough estimate of the cost, and some possible gear mechanics (I'm in Canada).
About selling: what would be a fair price for a machine with the quirks listed above? As much as I want to get everything working and do some recording, I have to consider the practical implications: I'm still too broke for mics, much less repairs; I'm moving into a significantly smaller space; it's 87 lbs and I have nobody helping me with the move; I need rent money. Does anyone know of any shops/individuals that would be interested?
I would love to hear from anyone on possible causes/solutions. Sorry for the long first post; I hope to be on here more in the coming months, though it remains to be seen if I'll still be on the analog side of things!
