I picked up another 3440 off ebay the other day. It has a problem with the transport not running.... Hopefully not too hard to fix. The nice thing is that it comes with new heads (less than 10 hours on them) and NAB adapters. Looks like it is in good condition otherwise. It should be fun to work on.

I keep thinking that I should sell off my other 3440 and pick up a 34b then sell this one off. Of course the African Rosewood on my other 3440 makes it very nice to look at.

Choices, choices

Congrats and my hopes that you can get it going without too much grief.

As for which to keep; keep them all! Worst case scenario, winter is here and a few of them placed in the truck of your car will add to your traction! :D

Cheers! :)

Has arrived and is working

The Deck arrived today just in time for the xmas weekend. I managed to get it running in about an hour. Off with the side panels and back. A quick check of the fuses showed no problem. No obvious smell of smoke in the machine So I powered it up. The capstan motor turns so we have some power. All power supply voltages are in tolerance.

At this point I thought it must be in the control logic board. So out comes the board for a visual and there it is...The 2 transistors that form a regulated 6v local logic supply are toast. Burnt to a crisp. This is good news!

Now I don't have the specific devices here but it turns out that I do have something close enough (I used a 2n2222 for the driver and has another NPN power transistor floating around). In they go.

Now for the flame test. Once more it is powered on and let idle for about 10 seconds. Then pull the plug and check the temp of the power transistor. No problem (thus it appears that the cause of failure was age rather than another fault).

Repower and press play and it does :D FF, rev all work :D :D

I'll pick up the correct parts over the next few days and proceed in the alignment.

I should add that the deck came fairly well packed with foam under it and around it. It was wrapped in bubble wrap and had 2 pillows on the front. The pillows worked quite well as the the reel tables were in great shape. What a great way to get rid of used pillows.

Happy camper here.
