Behringer Truths come in just over $300...at $339 shipped.
225 watts a piece, powered.
I've had mine for about a month and really like them.

If your space is small, you may get away with the smaller models (6.5" woofers) for $279 shipped.

Keep in mind that you should add some sort of stands or decouplers, and balanced cables to your budget.

Mopads - $40
Balanced cables x2 - $30

I got a pair of YSM2P that I believe were round that price range. and there doing great for me so far.

Well I've got the Alesis M1 MKII active monitors and they cost me $279 after shipping, which is an incredible deal cause they blow away monitors that I've tried that cost twice that price.

only pairs for $300 that I like are the Rokit 5s and the Behringer Truths. I prefer the Rokits but the Truths are ok. If you are really serious about getting a pair fo monitors Id try to save up atleast $500 for a pair of Rokit 8s. I myself plan on saving up $700 for a pair of Hs80s by Yamaha those things are amazing. The DynAudio BM5As are also a good choice for budget monitors but cost $1,000. Monitors are important and you shouldnt skimp on them. If you are like me and don't have a lot of extra money to spend it may be worth while to save up for a few months or trying american musical vs buying something with what you have in your pocket right now. I did that in 2004 and 6 months later I wanted new monitors and have been looking for a new pair since. Don't make the same mistake I did.

I can speak for Alesis M1 (passives, not actives - you can get them for about $200 plus what you spend on an amp) and Wharfedale Diamond Pro 8.1's.

The Alesis sound like good listening speakers. I always had problems getting mixes to translate, because bad mixes sounded good on them. Then I got the Wharfedales. The Wharfes (to me) are like the stories I read of NS10's: if it sounds good on them, it will sound good anywhere (and it's hard to sound good on them).

I use them both now. Certain flaws in the mix pop out better on each set. It's easier to hear overall spectral balance on the Wharfes, but I hear WAY more detail on the Alesis. I'd hate to be stuck with either by themselves, but if I had to choose one I'd go with the Wharfedales.

Not sure this helps you, because I think the net result is that cheap monitors will likely be flawed in some way. If I were going with another set of cheap monitors, I'd probably take a look at the Wharfedale 8.2's or the Yorkville's.
