1.... Beer.
2....More Beer.....
3....All the beer is mine.

I only record myself. Well, except for the occasional drunk that can play at my house.

That is all.....

I'm using a Aardvark Direct Pro soundcard and a Peavey RQ2316 mixer... connected using XLR leads. There's no gain knob on the soundcard's breakout box, that's all controlled using software. The gain there is set at '0'.

Jeesh just had a thought whilst explaining this, if I'm using XLR leads to connect to the soundcard.... it might assume it's a microphone and naturally boost the gain. Maybe I need to RTFM again after all these years, but thanks MM for highlighting a problem I've just kinda ignored.
I have the same interface and you turn on the Mic pre's from the control panel. The only thing is, I believe when you plug in an XLR cable the Mic Pre 1 comes on automatically, but you can switch it back to Line. Incidentally there are two settings for Mic Pres on this interface. M1 provides +55dB and M2 +75dB.

1) Apply EQ (and/or efx) to the input signal/mix to get the most optimum sound going into the recorder, and down to tape.

2) If Rule #1 is applied properly, the audio will need little or no tweaking on remix. Just push up the faders & pan for stereo.

3) A good mix should sound fine when cranked to "10" on your car stereo. If it sounds shrill, overloaded or has some other noticeable defect when turned up to "10", it's not a good mix.
