3.1.7 - Problems

Problem #1

Bugs keep cropping up with song files getting corrupted. I'll save a file, quit, and then when I try to open the song I just saved the program will not open it successfully. i thought the problem was with loading plugins, but then it occurred again with a song in which I hadn't even loaded plugins.


Problem #2

Something wrong with track-offset compensation. When using WDM drivers, program will sometimes put new tracks temporally ahead of the originals (seems to depend on driver's buffer settings). I observed this problem when beta testing new delta drivers from maudio (the old maudio drivers had a big track-offset bug, so it's worthless to test with them). The new drivers worked fine with all the other apps i tested, as well as with ntrack 3.0.3. The new drivers aren't available yet, but I bet if you're using WDM with other soundcards you'll have the same problem.


Considering these 2 major issues, I would advise against using this version of ntrack. Hopefully the next one will be better.

I think the track offset problem is happening for a few others too.

3.1.7 sounds good,but I think I'll wait for the next build.
It seems that each new version needs at least a month to "settle in".

v2.3 still seems to be the most stable judging by posts.
(I've not tried it,but do have a copy).
It actually sounds almost uncrashable......those that've used it,is this true?
Does it run on XP?
Are the newer versions features that much better?

I did get v3.1.4 (i think---they change so often) to work so well,I couldn't crash it,even when i tried!!!

I've now just built a dual boot system (2 x XP), in the hope that'll help stability,one set up dedicated just to music.
Haven't actually tried it out yet though.

Like a lot of ppl,I really like n,and although the midi side is a bit *crap*,it's actually getting a lot better.
The rest of the prog is really intuitive,and easy to get the hang of....I'm always suprised as to what it can do.

Ben, I emailed Flavio about the original m-Audio WDM track offset problem back when we first started discussing it. I wonder if he didn't write some compensation into n-Track?? Wouldn't that be odd...he didn't mention it in the revision history, although I have a feeling he doesn't mention everything.

Following Flavio's advice, I tried unchecking the 'keep audio devices open' box in advanced device preferences (default is checked). This solved the track offset problem.

The other problem, I now realize, was due to an ntrack config file existing in the project directory. This sometimes happens - I think if you launch ntrack from an existing song file the first time after you install it. After i deleted the file, along with a directory named 'VST Plugins', I was once again able to open my song files without error.


So the 2 initial bugs I reported are correctable. I will post new ones if/when I discover them.
