I've read that having a second hard drive greatly optimizes PC performance (if the software is on one drive, and audio/reference files are on the second, etc).

I'd like to purchase a new drive for my computer:
Computer: Dell Dimension 8200 (Pentium 4, cpu 2 GHz, 512 MB ram)
OS: Windows XP

Any recommendations for type, size, and cost? And if you know of good places that have good prices, please let me know, thanks!

Ive always had good performance with the WD drives.
The higher the rpm the better 7200-10,000
Seagate is ok, maxtor ?
60 to 80 gig will do for audio.
look for mail in rebates and clearance drives to save money.

most drives are good enough these days - although WD hasn't ever done me wrong. Just don't do what I did and get a 30Gb drive. I've only managed to fit 7 songs on it(and I only record vocals as a wav, the rest is MIDI) before running out of space. It's also odd but the bigger the hard drive the faster it is so splash out if you feel you need to.
Although, a good side effect of having a smaller drive is I can unhook it and archive it safely without bothering with an annoying backup and just buy a new one.
