Hi all,

I read an ad about a rental company that sells a big load of second hand mics which are described as 'Medium good condition'.

Scratches and other damage on the outside don't concern me that much, but can one of you tell me if it is possible that the core of the microphone suffers from aging? Can old mics sound worse than new ones and how come?

I guess it all depends on how old is old. Most rental companies get rid of their gear quite regularly. I have recently brought 2 Senn E865's ex rental and they sound exactly like the one I purchased new.As in everything second hand "caveat emptor"

Age wouldn't be nearly as critical as spit build-up. Spit builds up on the diaphragm over usage time and can severely hamper the sound of the mic. There are a few reputable folks around you can pay to clean them for you, but unless it's an expensive mic to begin with, it probably wouldn't be worth it.
