Ive been recording on a 12 track for awhile (Akai dps-12)
Im making the jump to 24 tracks and I need a couple answers.
A lot of the 24 track machines i see only have 12 faders with 2 tracks assigned to each. how can you mix correctly if the fader can only control one track at a time in real time? are there any digital 24 track recorders out there with 24 faders? i guess i just like having control over it all at the same time. please inform.
Thanks

I have the Roland 2480. Their solution to the less-faders-than-tracks problem is to motorize the faders. It remembers the location of faders 1-16. You push a button to access tracks 17-24 and the aux returns. The faders automatically move to the location for the new tracks. Set what you like, and then push the button to move back to tracks 1-16. Again, the faders all move to the correct 1-16 positions just like you left them.

There are actually 4 different fader "views" that all remember their settings independantly: The first half of the input mixer, the second half of the input mixer, the first half of the track mixer, and the second half of the track mixer. Just call up the view you want and the faders are instantly where you left them.

It's a very good solution. Never slows me down.

thanks chibi.
so when your mixing, you have to switch the fader assignments on the fly? i guess you really would have to have things dialed in before you mix. Still a little weary on the idea.

You can record fader movements. For example, if I know I need to gradually bring track 18 down at the end of the verse, I can play the song, move the fader in real time as it plays, and have it record that movement as I do it. From then on, every time I play the song the fader will move in exactly the same way. I mean it will physically slide along without me even touching it. Pretty cool, and it solves the problem of having to do simultaneous fader movements at mix time that are on different mixer "views".
