i walked into the store and noticed this old 22" zildjian, the store clerk told me it was an old ride, i tapped it with my finger and said it looks more like a crash (it was wobbling like a bowl of jelly)... either way i bought it..... i've tried using it as a ride, but it just don't have the properties you'd expect from a ride, in fact it gets lost in itself after two or three consecutive hits, so its not even likely to be a jazz ride....but as a crash it sounds almost exactly like my 20" sabian crash.... i'm geussing its a late seventies early eighties cymbal, and i was just wondering if zildjian made 22" crashes, or if i got a dodgy jazz ride???

just some guesses

OK, I'll bite. No one else seems to want to stick their neck out on this one soI will.

From what I know, you can "guesstimate" how old it is from these factors. Is there anything printed on the cymbals top or bottom?
If on the bottom and the Zildjian logo is just the Zildjian logo but the letters are not filled in (in the print world this is called stroke) then it is mid 70's to 80's.
If the logo is filled in than it is a relatively current model

If there is only a scribed logo (carved into the cymbal) and it says Avedis Zildjian all spelled out than I belive it is 50's to 60's ish. Which would be your dodgy jazz ride.

Best guess is the last one, since a 22" crash would definitely be a custom order.

Hope that helps and if my assessments are wrong, I am sure I will be quickly corrected. (which is really the goal here, to get you some info about your cymbal).

the stamp (not the painted one but the pressed one) has the avedis on it and the letters in the word zildjian are hollow, the stamp is much larger than that on my usual ride (another old one) which has zildjian stamped in solid letters...

by the way thanks a heap for that info nezpierce

My pleasure!

So my guess is a mid to late 70's Light Ride depending on the bell size.

Is the bell of the cymbal small (almost flat?) or is it really big? If the bell is big then I would definitely say custom ordered crash but if the bell is small then I'd say ride...

is this bell big or small?
i guess its smallish

hmmmm

Well based on the way the bell looks, and the fact that the cymbal is really thin (not too mention the color of the cymbal)

My final guess would be a late 60's to early 70's 22" thin crash.

The bell is pretty big which says crash to me. If it was a ride, large bell would mean thicker cymbal, small bell would be thinner cymbal. (generally speaking of course)

My time estimate is a guess based on this:
Cymbals used to to have to be big and ringy when amplified music became the standard in the late 60's. Rock drummers had to have big crashes (18", 20" etc) to really compete with the advent of the 4x12 guitar cab phenomenon. (although Jimmy Page would seem to be a likely culprit, he often used a 2x12 cab in the beginning and for recording if memory serves me well)

It wasn't until the 70's rolled around that cymbals started to get really technologocially advanced. (Paiste 2002 anyone?) and engineered for loud music so that smaller cymbal could cut it.

alll this is academic of course, as long as you like the cymbal that is all that matters :D

sounds good enough too me:

want another bite?

14" zidjian new beat hi hats (easy enough right?) MADE IN CANADA..... bet you didn't expect that coming, i was told they are actually sabians using a zildjian stamp just to help get the company up and running, any idea on a year?

and i have a 22" ride (zildjian) with exactly the same dimensions as the 22 crash, the sit ontop of each other perfectly, but the stamp is much smaller and closer to the edge of the cymbal, and the word zildjian is in solid type... you got a year on that one? it looks pretty much the same as the crash, just the stamp thats diferent, and all the paints worn off so i can't tel you about that

finally, 20" sabian crash (this is an easy one) the paint is still on it, and the emblem in the paint job is a lot smaller than many i've seen from the eighties, and once again a rough idea on the year would be nice

i got a few more old cymbals, but this is my main set up...they are all really big and look strange on my kit... (20"bd, 12" 16" toms, 14"snare) ... but i love thew huge sound of nicely worn in big clangers!

Hi:
I have read with interest about our friends 22", I have a 24 " ride. It seems medium compared to my Pastie rock ride 18".

The bell is rather large and is the best thing on this cymbal.

There is only writing on the top. It is pressed into the metal and the letters are rather small ( 8 pt type or so) There is some arab looking scratches and under it appear ADVIDAS ZILDJIAN in single stroke letters.

If wacked hard it sounds like a gong, ringing for minutes. Sounds nice and dark when tapped and smacked on the bell.

From my brief description can anyone give me and idea of it's age and value?

Thanks in advance

Wild Phil Harmonica.

hmmm. the small type description matches my hats, where was your 24" ride made? i'm guessing canada, if so i think early seventies
