I have $200 and want to know if I should buy a pair of monitors or just use normal speakers for my mixing? If you had $200 what would you buy and name and modle?

Also, is there going to be a big difference in mixing with $200 monitors or good speakers?

Thank you.

I would save more money. I'm on my second set of low budget monitors and wish that I had saved for something better. You get what you pay for.

maybe get a decent set of used bookshelf speakers and treat your room.

This is true....cheap monitors may be better than cheap pc speakers, but get something that can make the music sound good. It will help in the long run.

What is the least you would spend on a good pair of monitors?

i upgraded from 300 monitors to 1000 and ouch, my mixes back then sound bad.

depends on how serious you are about recording.

When I've saved enough, spent it, and am happy with my decision, I'll let you know. :D

Fwiw, the monitors I have now are'nt bad and are probably better than most in their price range but I do want something better. Art SLM-1's (same as Yorkville YSM-1 I'm told) with Art SLA-2 amp. $200 for the speakers (new) and $150 for the amp (used). I still have a pair of Wharf 8.2a's also. I tried two amps with the SLM-1's........the Art SLA-2 and the Hafler TA1600. There's an enourmous sonic difference in the amps. Here's what I think about the speakers and amps:

SLM-1's = good bass for 6 1/2's with pretty decent low extension, fairly neutral mids, slightly hyped hi's (maybe it's upper mids?) that make some guitars sound kind of fizzy, good stereo imaging when setup properly, can double as entertainment speakers.

8.2a's = sloppy bass and no low extension, hyped mids that bring vocals upfront (sounds good but I hate the result), very neutral hi's, good imaging that's pretty forgiving of placement and room, not very good for entertainment listening.

SLA-2 = good sounding and electronically quiet amp all round but it has an irritating little cooling fan that I hate which is about as loud as a small pc cooling fan.

TA1600 = thin bass, low power, imaging is'nt so great (maybe mine's defective but I don't think so) i'm gonna try it out again when i get my room straightened out. i forsee it going to ebay though.

For what I spent on all this cheap ass skanky gear, I could have some worthy monitors sitting in front of me. :D I say save your doh bro. If you absolutely must get something with your $200, get yourself a good set of headphones so that you can at least hear what you're tracking and keep saving for the monitors. Or, if you happen to have a decent amp or stereo receiver that you could use, you could get the SLM-1's for $200 which are good for the money. Either way, I'd want a decent set of phones first. You can always remix well recorded tracks.

At this time it is just a hobby and I am very new to home recording. I am baisicly looking for something for a newbie that will be good for a few years.

Then save up some money and get the Blue Sky Media Desk system..
http://www.smalldog.com/product/33509/atfgc (499 USD)

OR , the SWAN M200s.200 bucks.. trust me on that one...they are phenomenal.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16836136102
They will BURY, I mean BURY any thing under 700 bucks, including those Cheap POS "monitors" that are sold to unsuspecting startups.

These are your best bet, IMHO...If you dont like them, I will buy them right back from you, thats how confident I am that you will love them.

I'd be interested in everything you can tell me about those Blue Sky and Swan speakers. What can you tell me/us?

Are the SWAN M200s monitors or regular computer/stereo speakers? The reviews are incrediable I just want to make sure they can be used for monitors as from the reviews it seems like most people are using them for listing to music and not mixing music.

Thank you...

well, they are very transparent and translate very well to a variety of sources. They dont have a lot of the coloration that some speakers labeled as "monitors" do.They dont sound cheap, muffled ,and strident in the highs that a lot of the speakers labeled as "monitors" do.. They sound way above the price bracket. This is the absolute truth.

there is feedback on GS for the Blue Sky system.

they are both. They are a lot bigger than in the photo, dont be fooled. They are great as a low cost monitor set(yes, for mixing)....I have a couple friends that use them as a reference/2nd set for mixing(one of whom is a professional GRAMMY winning classical engineer).. Even in the future if you upgrade, you can keep those as a 2nd set for referencing mixes on.Bear in mind that a lot of engineers use what are deemed "playback" (my B+W 802s for example)speakers for mixing/mastering on..the main thing is knowing the speakers well, and of course getting some that will be true to the source material. Both of those systems are.

Any one know where I can get the SWAN M200s? Newegg is out of stock and I want to order a pair.

Anyone???
