2 inch 16 tracks???

Hallo,
I am wondering. If I want to get a 2 inch 16 track machine either modified or built where can I go for that? I think ART or ATR does it and there may be others. What would be my best option. Im thinking that I wont need any kind of NR with tape that wide. So where can I look and how much are we talking?

Apparently the dude knows his 2" machines, specializes in MCI and is a very popular go to person when someone wants to purchase one of these recorders. Lots of happy customers around.

Getting something made will cost you an order of magnitude more than buying an existing machine. Any kind of 2" headstack made new is going to be in the neighborhood of $8K-$10K.

Blevins site shows an Otari MTR-90 16 track for $3500. You can find 2" machines cheaper on eBay, but be cautious with anyone you don't know.

Remember that 16 tracks was the big deal only for a short time before 24 track machines came out, so a lot of these 2" machines were mainly sold as 24 track machines through the 70s and maybe 80s, but 16 track headstacks were often bought too for projects needing fewer tracks and the ability to mix that format on tapes recorded somewhere else. So you might check listings for 24 track machines and see if they are selling a 16 track headstack, too.
