Hey guys I have a Brauner Phantom C which I love but I need some tube warmth. I am now using the Focusrite ISA430 which is okay but doesn't cut it for warmth and openess. I am thinking single channel with some cool features like compressor, variable impedence, and eq. I need some suggestions. Help!!!!

HHB has a "toob channel strip" thing with pre/eq/compressor. It is a very nice sounding unit.

I am not sure that a toob unit is going to offer that much more "warmth" except to the temperature of your control room. The "upper level" Focusrite stuff is pretty well known for their "openness" in sound. I use a Red 8 a lot, and it is VERY open sounding. Depending upon the mic I use with it, it can sound quite warm too. With other mics, it sounds quite "hard".

I think I am saying that maybe "toob" vs "solid state" might not be the problem. Maybe you should consider trying some different mics out.

Good luck.

I'd suggest the Sebatron vmp1000e. http://www.sebatron.com/products/vmp1000.html
Runs around $900 - with or without VU meters.

The vmp has eq switches that offer some versatility. Really nice, soulful sound out of that pre. Complements the 428.

Stay away from the "cool options' and just get a good pre. If you want some compression you can slip an FMR RMC in the chain for $179.

Bro, for $400- I don't think you can be the Groove Tubes "Brick"... damn nice sounding little box.

Fletcher,
After reading many of your replies to questions about tube pres I'd never thought you would call a $400 tube pre "a damn nice sounding little box" I would call that high praise from you. I've been on the fence about buying that pre. Fits into my budget but I've been waiting for someone with your kind of knowledge to say something good about it.
The Brick is now on my Christmas list.
Thanks

Fletcher; I havent seen the brick for $400 anywhere...are you offering it for that price...if so I couldnt find it on your site.

Id like to see a block diagram of the thing too...I do trust that it is not a starved plate design...seeing as how you are reccomending it. :)

I read that the bassman Leland syklar is using one-Wonder how many tubes are in it

Yes the Brick is a killer tube mic pre for your buck. It's made with very high quality components. But, it's made in China that's why it's very affortable. If they were made in the US. It would easily go for 600.00 to 700.00 bucks. I've got the Brick and it sounds great!! Even the DI sounds killer!! This mic pre in my opinion sounds better than the RNP which I had sold some time ago.
