Ears,

I must say that I agree with you everyone says that their stuff is the best. I just think that those pres you mentioned are all very good for different things

Luckily, this is the only preamp that I've ever used, so I am able to make judgements on it based on its own merit and not how it compares to another unit.

From the sound that I get from this unit, without comparing it to anything else, it is awesome. Absolutely awesome. Would I want that sound on EVERYTHING I track? no . Absolutely not.

If I have another $400 laying around (read: after I've bought all my other equipment but still not fixed my car) then I would like to look into another unit that offers a transparent sound so that I can have the best of both worlds

If you like it that's the main thing.

You have to use it. I may buy a Meek one day too.
I tried the Bellari channel and it was oozing with tube too.

Like my fellow Canadian group Bare Naked Ladies said.........
"If I had a million dollars"......:)

Lets also remember that the VC1Q, VC6Q, and VC3Q are not tubes. The VC6Q and VC3Q are both chipsets and the VC1Q is a transformer. And as far as the meek sounding clean if you decrease the drive on the pre turn up the output instead and then use the enhancer it will brighten the sound right up and there will be no coloration, or at least there will not be the Meek signature sound. I can use the meek for every recording and depending on the sound I want I can just change one or two settings and I am good to go. Just my .02 worth so that someone reading this thread doesnt get the wrong Idea.

Shakes,

P.S. I also used the mindprint many times and it is a great pre, but there is nothing you can do with it that I can't do with my meek. And the Meek stuff also has the Meek sound if you want it.

Have you hugged your JoeMeek today?

you're right

shakes,

I did that yesterday, and I was impressed that I got minimal coloration. But I just wanted to add that to get that minimal coloration, you have to turn off the compressor and the equaliser.

Play with the settings a little and you can use the pressor. But the you are right about the EQ, which I dont use much anyway. ;-) glad to see you like your new toy though.

Yeah man. I simply love this new toy-eh- investment.

I recorded a friend last night that had just lost a singing competition because he did not sound good( or so he thought). To cheer him up, I asked him if he wanted to record the song.

We recorded the song. No compression, no eq, and my dude heard it, he was jumping all over himself. I added some ringy plate reverb and some early out and he almost cried with joy and excitement.

Anyhow, thanks for the info on the compression. I am sure that I will seldom want to record without that sweet color, but if I do I now know how.
