the mother question...

taking into account
#1) ease of use (intuitiveness)
#2) sound quality

please discuss...the roland, fostex, korg, akai, and the soon to be yamaha 16 trackers

you guys hate this question, don't you?

i think i might be leaning toward the AKAI...

oh well...anybody with time to give input would be appreciated....

i live in a small town in the woods, near a marsh, under a rock, near a snail..so the local music shoppe is NO help....

All things considered, the Akai DSP-16 is the best unit out there for the money right now.

Ahhh, 62, my friend from Chicago and the Como Inn's Good Food. [you would never believe I used to be a bartender there before college.]

However, DDDDREW, etc.

Whatever you buy, get at least 8 tracks. I've never used Akai, but I trust 62's experience. The Yam MD-8 is not hard to use, except for a couple of things I haven't figured out yet, neither has the MD-8 forum.

Alas, such are the vagaries of learning.

well..i went and did it...ordered the akai last night...i think i got a great deal...i looked all over the internet...highest price was 2499, and i got mine new with the efx card for 1849. saw a lot for 1999. the bummer is i paid for overnight delivery only to find out they are back ordered and are now saying 5-7 days...

if anyone might care, i'll post reviews..i have experience with the roland already...

if the akai sucks, i'm blaming 62.

No problemo...

Not a bit of worry here.

I'm going to buy the Akai unit within the next month or so. I've done extensive research on this.... so relax, twiddle the dials, and enjoy. :)
Remember... a unit like this is only as good as what you put into it. So, take your time and get each track exactly the way you like it.
24 bit/96Khz is the real deal, but since it IS digital, try to keep the signals warm and listener-friendly. You're gonna LOVE this thing.

i feel like i did a good amount of research as well...the only negatives i read were on the vs planet board and they were that the akai has inferior effects and poor product support/company service...but i figure it was just sour grapes because the akai obviously KICKS ROLAND'S BUTT!... :)

anyway, i guess you and i will be learning this thing together because planet akai bbs is a deserted wasteland.....

ooops, one more question...the unit i bought is the dps16i....is that the same as the dps16? only with efx card? that's what i'm banking on.....

I'm not sure about that...
and, unfortunately, I'm hitting the road in one hour to drive to New Jersey.
I'd call the place where you ordered it and ask them "exactly" what the "i" means.
I know that the DPS-12i has an "i" in it.

If you want to check further, go to...
www.akaipro.com

They might have the answer there.

Ciao! I'm off to the East coast! :)

Don't have the money but the akai would be my choice in porta's. Well, that or the new yamaha aw4416, that thing looks like a bear, man. but its $1500 more. I await your reviews guys!

8th street music informs me that the 2 akai dps 16's that they have recieved so far were both defective...one with noisy faders and the other with "digital pops"....akai states they have been rushing through quality control and this may be the issue, but are replacing the units. i hope the incidents are isolated....

i am a yamaha fan, and would have gone for the aw4416 in a heartbeat if it was ready to go and priced comparably.....

i should have the akai next week.

i'll keep you posted.
