Ok here's my dilema, I have $100 left towards spending and i'm a little stuck on what to put it towards, normally i'd just save it but its a gift from my grandmother and she wants to actually get me something.. not cash.

I just upgraded my monitors to Events, I have a great compressor, nice EQ, BBE enhancer, studio projects pre, upgraded my mixer to a FW 1082, upgraded all my mics to.....

Drums
samson tom mics x4
at2020 x2
at2021
d6 kick mic
sm 57

Amp (possibilities)
senheiser e609
sm57
at2020/21
D6 (for Bass) or I can use my nice DI

Vox
At2020
sm58
mxl 990 x2

Right now I've started to redo the foam in my vocal booth so I have approximately... 35 peices of auralex installed in my 4'x4'x7' booth. Its covering the top front/left/right side. I just ordered corner blocks to fill in and those 3 walls are set. The rest is covered with matress foam to keep it from sounding like complete ass.

OK SO after all this ranting, my decisions have come to this.

Should I buy a new tube pre to use on my cymbal overhangs and possibly even sue towards recording the guitars and vox?

Should I get another 24 peices of auralex towards my vocal booth?

Should i get another $100 dynamic mic to use on recording guitars? Because my guitar tone is whats the weakest in all my recordings. (It's good but not perfect...nowhere near as good as drums and vox)

or do you have another sugestion?

I want something to improve my recordings. Even if it's just the sound of my cymbals and giving it a warmer tone.

THANKS!!!!!

I would NOT buy a tube-pre with it... $100 isn't gonna get you a whole lot as far as pre's and mic's go. I'd say get yourself some decent hardware. A decent boom or two, maybe a real pop filter, maybe some decent cables. The little things like that really make a difference in your workflow.

yea, that was my toher thought, higher end mic cbales...

do you suggets any? I could get as many as my $100 gets me then continue after.

They need to be... about 20' a peice. (i have a snake already btw)

8 - 20ft mic cables for under $100. beat that with a stick... you just gotta put in a little leg work. Soldering iron and solder can be had for under $10 from your local rat shack.

EDIT: Quick comparrison...

http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/XLR20 x 8 = $153.52

and the quality of cable you are getting with the ProCo isn't as nice either. The redco stuff is quad core, more like this...

Cables, absolutely. I preach the gospel of good cables to any poor bastard who happens to wander by. Which today is you.

Thank you so much! Thats exactly what I'm going to do. Upgrading my mic cables is definately a necessity for me.

You're going to spend the $100 on cables...? Or did you need longer ones?

I'd go for cables or mic stands, you can never have too many of either.

headphones, headphone amp, headphone cable extensions...
that's what i'd get. i never seem to have enough of those dang thangs.

You can make headphone extensions from the same cable if you use the correct ends BTW...

You can get great headphones for around $100. And definitely mic stands as well. I'd get those first unless the cables are necessary.

I actually have 3 pairs of really nice headphones so I'm not goign to buy anymore for a while haha. And as mic stands go, yea i could definately upgrade those, but I think the cbales might make the biggest difference. I want my studio to sound the best it can for a home studio. So the cable upgrade I think will definately bring my studio to that next level.

what kind of headphones for about $100 are good for recording?

I have the "direct sound" isolation heapdhones and they are a godsend! $100 even, and they are the bets pair of headphones ive ever used.

Also the ATH-M20 headphones are incredible! There only like $40 new on ebay and are amazing for the guitarist to record with. Crystal clear, isolated ENOUGH, and the chord is long.
