    Thumping

Change the position and distance of the microphone. If it's too close to the guitar or the soundhole, the bass frequencies will be emphasized. Also, I dont know what equipment and or software you're using but try to find the problem frequency with a parametric EQ. It will probably be below...

    raising the poles

The closer the pole pieces are to the strings, the more output, too close and the magnetic field might interfere with sustain. Pretty much the same effect as raising the whole pickup. But if you raise some poles more than others you can adjust the balance between the strings. Also raising all...

    Need help on new pickups

I'd say the 59 model. Seth Lovers might have problems with microphonics with the heavier stuff if you play at loud volumes. The 59 is also quite a bit less expensive if I recall correctly.

    Which pickups??

It makes since that the Evolutions would have more sustain as they are higher output and have ceramic magnets. Ceramic magnets have quite a bit less string pull than alnicos I believe, and also supposedly make pickups more compressed sounding. Alnico pickups can be lowered to reduce magnet pull...

    Which pickups??

For shred style I'd definitely say Humbucker from Hell in the neck. It's the clearest humbucking pickup I've ever used so far, more like the sound of a single coil than a humbucker. The Air Norton is also clear and has a thicker sound but it is pretty similar to the Breed neck if you're trying...

    Crystal Clean Rock Pups

I haven't really used a lot of different pickups, but for clean sounds I'd recomend either the Dimarzio humbucker from hell (very glassy/sparkly and singlecoil-like, definately not a bridge pickup though), the Seymour Duncan Jazz model (Warmer, not 'scooped' in my opinion but that depends a lot...

    What are clipping diodes?

They're also used in pedals, solid state and some modern tube amps to simulate an overdriven sound (or to get more distortion without adding more tubes).

Strat / Single coil wiring ?'s

As far as I'm concerned, the phase of single coil pickups doesn't matter unless they are combined with another (i.e. the 2 and 4 positions). Other than that I have no idea. If one or all of the pickups were doing that I'd say maybe a bad connection or bad pickup, but just 2 of them... Is it...

How can I avoid the fizzies when recording guitar?

Roll off frequencies above around 5khz with the high shelf or graphic eq.

    Tube amp modification question

I've been doing some mods on my amplifier but theres one I'm not sure of, basically its a fender-marshall switch. Right now all it does is switch between 2 tone stacks, but I wanted to change it to a 3PDT switch so that it will also change the cathode bypass capacitor and coupling capacitor in...

    Vintage or what?

The MTS has 6l6 tubes and is suited better for metal I guess, where as the Belair has el84's and is more of a blues/classic rock amp. They both have great clean channels as well. I have the Vintage 16 amp (which is like a smaller version of the belair) and its an awesome amp for what I use it for.

    Greenback in open-back combo

I'm currently looking for a speaker for a Carvin Vintage 16 1x12, and it's pretty much between the Celestion Greenback G12M and the G12H30. I'm more drawn to the Greenback because of the lower sensitivity level and because I like the sound better judging by sound clips. But the problem is I've...

Need suggestions on all Tube practice amp...

The Carvin vintage 16 goes down to 5 watts but its still too loud for my house when cranked, let alone an apartment. I'd have to recomendthe 1/2 watt Zvex nano head even though its a bit over $400 (its about $425 I think). Edit: I read your post a little too fast..the nano head doesnt have...

    Boss DS-2 clipping diodes

Thanks for the info. I went and removed diodes 11,12,14,15 and left the soft clipping ones.. It seems to have made the pedal louder which makes sense, but it still seems to be harsh sounding even at low dist settings, and not smooth like an overdrive. I'm thinking some of the transistors might...

    Boss DS-2 clipping diodes

By any chance would someone be able to tell me which diodes in this schematic http://www.mif.pg.gda.pl/homepages/tom/files/DS-2.gif are working as clipping diodes? Also would removing these be able to convert the pedal to more of a clean boost as I don't really have any use for the pedal the way...

Which New Speaker for 1x12 Combo?

Not to make things more difficult, but have you considered the G12H 30 watt speaker. It is supposed to be voiced somewhere in between the Vintage 30 and the Greenback.

Which New Speaker for 1x12 Combo?

The Greenback is supposed to be ideally suited to blues style. I have one in my 1x12 and I like it a lot for jazz to classic rock type tones, but my experiences with them in is that they get kind of fuzzy sounding in high gain settings and might not be agressive enough for metal styes. I found...

What's your fav over drive stomp box?

RC Booster. Though its more of a clean boost than an overdrive.

    Fine, laugh at me, but

Some 12ax7 preamp tubes are labeled as 'graded for high gain' but I dont know if those drive the power amp more or if they just create more preamp distortion. I suppose it might make a difference which tube you replace.

    Fine, laugh at me, but

Well, I did this once using a Carvin Nomad (vintage type amp) and a wah pedal with a 20db boost function, and nothing was damaged as far as I know. If anything, expect the power tubes to not last as long.
