Recently i have been using SM58's on the toms.. with the grill taken off. Still 57's on the snare, but i don't have enough for the whole kit. Apparently they are pretty much identical, except that the SM58 has 10Hz less bottom end. Does anyone else use SM58's on their drums?

Im not sure whether to be using XY, Spaced Pair, etc. Our drummer likes to have his snare offset to the left a bit, so using spaced pair has the snare picked up in the left overhead a bit more. And if i try to compensate i get phase problems.

Does mattresses and foam do the job if you're on a budget?
