Overhead micing techniques?

Im not sure whether to be using XY, Spaced Pair, etc.

Our drummer likes to have his snare offset to the left a bit, so using spaced pair has the snare picked up in the left overhead a bit more. And if i try to compensate i get phase problems.

With XY it should be easy to place (center) the snare. With spaced OH equal distance (and gain/record level) will center the image both in terms of Haas effect and the simple level difference.
How were you compensating that was causing phase issues BTW?
