Another option other than a basic mic preamp is a harmonizer. For a bit more cash you get a nice, clean preamp channel plus the added functionality of harmony generation, effects, and pitch correction. +1 on the amp sims and lack of guitar mojo ... Barking dogs and telephones aren't nearly as annoying with a direct setup ... Besides, I like to run through a noise gate when tracking guitar (I use a hardware DAW and a PodXT), which I can do without an external preamp if I eschew a mic.

Sounds to me like something's wrong if that set up isn't loud enough to overcome un-mic'd drums. What are you singing through? Maybe the mic, mixer, or something else in your set up is the problem and not the amp.

I don't NEED to use it. I get perfectly good levels into the 1600 without it. But since I have it I figured I might as well use it since it's got to be at least a little better than the pres on the 1600.
