I've got the Toft, and while I've not used that particular Meek, I am familiar with other Meek strips. The Toft, to me, is clearly the better choice, unless you love the Meek color and want to commit to that. Fletcher and others have said that the Toft pre isn't too hot - and it (and a lot of...
Seems like the 57 gets a lot of unfair criticism - personally, I think it's ideal for a heavily distorted guitar cab. It's like having the right amount of eq right at the source.
See if you can first place your mics where you need next to no eq when mixing. Usually, I like to either add or take away some click on the kick drum, but generally won't do much more eq'ing unless I'm going for an effected sound.
My room is a little bigger than yours (about 15' x 12'), and I've got a Yamaha Stage Custom I'm recording. Two things have helped me tremendously: bass traps, and relying less on my overheads and more on my close mics. I try to get a solid kick and snare sound, and use my overheads for some...

I'm lacking a dedicated kick mic, as well as a tube / ribbon (i.e., "color") mic.
Yep, like others have said, a room of that size could bring out some problems and it'll be in the overheads (vs. the close mics) that you'll notice it. I'm in a similar situation - in a small room - so I use my overheads to just pick up the cymbals and give the kit a little bit of space. Since...
kick drum mic
I've had some luck lately with a somewhat strange setup...a beyer m69 maybe 6" from the beater, slightly off axis, and an at4033 3' outside the kick, 3' high and pointing at the middle of the kick. The beyer gets a nice low-mid thump and some click, while the 4033 picks up a...
Beyer m69...and it can be a great Neil Young / Harvest-era kick drum mic, too.
FWIW, I really like c1000's as a compliment to a LDC on acoustic guitar, especially for arpeggiated stuff where you want some bite. I know of at least one very respected person who uses them as go-to mics on guitar...
I've become a big fan of an at4033 about 5' high looking down toward the guitar, mixed with something like an adk sc1 about 8" off the 12th fret. Pan them however you like, and you've got a nice Tom Petty sound going.
And I like it better as a DI, FWIW. I changed the tube to a JJ Tesla, and with my P-Bass (w/ a reissue '61 pickup in it), the VTB is my go to bass DI. I find the preamp to be fairly forward, and maybe a little harsh in the high end but handling lower frequencies fine. It works well on snare w/...
Sorry is this has been covered...
I'm pretty new to recording drums, and am having a problem removing some ringing from a snare. It is a steel 14x5.5 yamaha from a stage custom set. I've replaced the top head with an Evans ST dry, and have that head tuned up pretty well (I think). The snare...
