Best Preamp for drums

I use whatever pres are around at the time. At various times that has been API, Neve, Manley, Millennia, Great River, Trident, Sony/MCI, Phoenix Audio, Focusrite, Sebatron, SSL, D&R, DDA, Mackie, Behringer, Calrec, Harrison, Neotek, Sytek, Raindirk, Amek, Soundcraft, Telefunken, Yamaha, TL Audio, Soundcraft, Peavey, Avalon, Studio Projects, Tascam, Buzz, Ward Beck, Sound Workshop, DACS, Drawmer, Elberg, Grace, RCA, Quad Eight, Allen & Heath, Electrodyne, Speck, Groove Tubes, Joemeek, Euphonix, RNP, Rane, Hardy, Martech, Summit, Fearn, Presonus, True, Universal Audio, Tube Tech, DPA, TC Electronic, Vintech, A Designs, Crane Song and whatever else was lying around that we could use.

I was just wondering if there were any preamps you haven't tried yet that you were interested in trying, and what they were. Because I would love to try so many from the list you made, but was wondering.... hmmm.... what would he want to try.

I've been happy with my Toft ATC-2 on kick and snare, FWIW. The EQ is priceless for my purposes.

I like the OSA's C's on the drums and A's overhead and the L3 in the kik..I love 'em even in my shitty room LOL

I usualy use an Audient desk for recording my drums...but if you want good and cheap pre amps for drums, focusrite, art, dbx, tl audio are all good cheap choices...if you don´t have alot of money, a mackie will work just fine!but first of all, try to have a good acustic drum sound, if you have that, all turns alot easyer.

I use the Trident stuff for drums. (S20)

Love the sound of them, they really handle the transient stuff in a nice way.

I"m just curious, BB, do you just not prefer API on toms, or is it more of an issue with the pres being taken by other mics?

On a side note, anyone have thoughts on using a 1272 on toms or overheds?

Try the 1272 on the overheads,see if you like it there..might be too "slow"/thick for you, but ya never know!..Toms would be a easy bet..IMHO

If you like the Trident S20, wait tell you try a real Trident. You will wonder how you ever liked the S20 The real trident magic is in the "A" range stuff, particularly in the EQ's. Thats why I like the DaKing channels so much. They really seem to impart alot of the vintage Trident EQ sound. Even the Malcolm Toft ATC-2 has a lot of those same characteristics. Then again, that isn't really surprising.

As far as the 1272 goes, my bet is on overheads it will rock, on toms, it will sound good too, but will really make you wish for an API or 4

If you have the 1272, might also want to try it on kick and/or snare. I prefer it there rather than on overheads, where i tend to use API's. For toms the combination of punch and clarity that works best for me is a 414 through a daking.

api overheads. 610s snare and kick. toms could be whatever, hopefully your overheads with the apis can get a good tom sound from there.
