I've had this mic for some time now, being my first condenser.Used it for acoustics and vocals.Anyways I pulled it out, getting back to recording again. And I swear its giving off like false highs.Years back when I was using the 4033 I did'nt know any better. Or just thought thats the way it was supposed to sound. Is this common with this mic or do I have a bad mic?And if this is the way it sounds before eq.Do I keep it and apply it as needed.I really notice the false highs on vocals.Kinda reminds me of a Tyler thing going on.

the response of a mic doesn't make it good or bad, the question of whether or not it is useful in your studio does. there's definitely some high-end enhancement with the 40 series. i just picked up the 4040 and noticed it. kinda hoped for it actually, it complements my comparatively darker v67's very nicely.

I'd describe mine as being forward-sounding, but not in a way of giving of false high end. I find it more pronounced in the upper mids, really.

as far as cheep mics go, you can do far worse in the hi-end, trust me.

Guess I just dont like the sound of this one.Just tired of trying to get it to sound natural. Thanks to you all I now know it will never be...Out the door with this one.

Mine has always sounded very natural and fairly flat. Like SDC with more "space" around it. Never had any problem with the highs.

yea, just wait till you get one of the "bargen" condensers that REALLY burn your ears off.

if the 4033 is your brightest mic then you don't know pain.

(not that it's (the 4033) the best, but go try an apex or something  )

Just a tip on that mic - pretty wide pattern - and your reflections can for sure contribute to a nastier top. watch your room and it can be 'open' as opposed to 'shrill'...but you do have to work it a bit with placement.

or get the 4047...it's the AT mic that isn't an AT mic.

I'll second that. The AT4047 is completely different from the rest of the AT 40 Series line. It's sure worth a listen. See if you can borrow one.

Yeah, I hadn't tried an SM7 until a couple of weeks ago. I wound up using it on lead vox on a session last week. Very happy with it.
