Hey Guys.

Somebody type me a list of all the best kick drum mics out there...

This is the deal..I just bought a D112...and it sounds good...but want to know more options to try out... unless anyone thinks that the D112 will get thejob done. Ineed something for more clean sounding music..like country...like roudy country..almost like rock...My kit sounds great..exactly how i want it..i just need to know what mic..

The D112 should get the job done. There's been tons of threads on this here, do a search and check them out. I personally prefer the Shure Beta52 over the D112, but the differences are barely noticeable, theyre very similar mics.

The Sennheiser MD421 works really well for kick too. I use it when I'm looking for something other than the clicky bass drum sound in which case I use the Audix D6.

kick drum

is the d112 a clicky sounding mic?...i want a nice low end thump...with no distorsion or pops...

The D112 has a sort of scooped mids sound which works well on a lot of stuff, if the kick is clicky it'll give it back. It does the "round bottom end" thing well. The D112 tends to impart its own sound on kicks, which can be good and bad.

The E/V ND868 is a pretty neutral kick drum mic. The RE20 is a good choice too.

The SM57 can make a great kick drum mic, especially real close mic'ing.

I like the ND868 comined with an Sm91..... Beta 52 WORKS WELL TO.........I have had mixed results with the D112 pobably due to inconsistent drummer rather than mic quality.......you know you can't polish a turd :)

I use the ND868 inside, off center and a md421 pointing towards the beater on the outside about 4-6 inches away. I love the results I get and can mix the two to whatever the song needs.

Yeah, the drum and the drummer have a much bigger impact on the overall sound. I can put the same mic in 10 different kicks and it'll sound different every time. Also different drummers playing the same kit will sound different. That was a real eye opener to me.

kick drum mic

I've had some luck lately with a somewhat strange setup...a beyer m69 maybe 6" from the beater, slightly off axis, and an at4033 3' outside the kick, 3' high and pointing at the middle of the kick. The beyer gets a nice low-mid thump and some click, while the 4033 picks up a pretty good image of the whole kick.

Boy does that sound familiar. Seems like I just heard that same thing on the phone last night......Hey Mike! Guess what! I got that ATM 25 today for $75 and tax. Can't wait to try it out.
Thanks for you help, especially for steering me away from cheap crap.

I think OP was listing the other mic's for the rest of the kit, not as alternative kick mic's. If so I'd use the Sennheiser on snare/highhat, 57s on the toms (natch) and the AKG for overhead, but that goes without saying. I think you'll really like the sennheiser.

Quick note, i looked at your site and noticed that you said "And of course the Focusrite pre's in the 002r"

Theyre actually Alesis pre's.

Not that i care, just thought youd want to know.

Loved White Sands by the way, nice work.
