Thanks for the dialect tuition Ritchie, I only had Jed Clampett and Bill Clinton as my mentors. I'm interested in the Perception 400 but I can't seem to find out much from any source, has anyone out there got an opinion.
It seems that a while back many people were comparing mics like the SP-C1 to the U87 ...much to the dismay of purists or folks who actually had a U87 and disagreed with that outrageous suggestion. Obviously the U87 is a mic that is continually used as a benchmark for makers and consumers...
As a matter of interest DOT, do you think the ADKs are the best budget U87 out there??? are there other U87 contenders that you like.
Also do you think the earlier B1s were better or have they improved with the more recent model???
Also I believe the ADKs have been updated are they better than...
I'm thinking of getting a mid price multi pattern LDC mic that I can use on some vocals but also instruments such as piano, string bass, cello, and maybe brass.
In other words a versatile workhorse.
These two mics get a lot of praise, are there any others similarly price that are also worth...
Thanks Jim, I guess I hadn't really thought about dynamics too much. Someone recommended the Beyer TG X 98 (I think that was it) as an alternative to the SM57. Does anyone else know this mic. The Audix i5 gets a little bit of praise too. Both fairly cheap I think.
If you want a bit of variety, a pair of MXL603s are very good and also very inexpensive without sounding cheap. A lot of people get very good results with the Studio Projects B1 if you want to try a large condenser, also very inexpensive. All three would set you back less than US$300 and give...
I haven't heard too many good things about the C-2s. You could sell them on ebay and get a quote from this guy for a pair of the MXL603s...

they are "hot" and pretty versatile.
There would be other deals out...
I thought it was interesting to then go back to the top and start comparing the ones I had rated highly before I then went to the ID page.
I was amazed how well the Oktaver and SP-B1 sat in there with the rest. Also the Rode.
Thanks Don. You tend to hear mixed opinions about most mics but I read a review from a guy (front end audio I think) who thought they were very good value and had a lot of uses. The MXL mics get very mixed reviews depending on their model, but they have this fairly new multi pattern LCD the 2010...
What are recommendations for most versatile budget multi-pattern LDC ???
The only ones I know of are the CAD M179, the AKG Perception 400, and the new MXL 2010. Does anyone have any recommendations or warnings regarding these or others.
There aren't a lot of mics that have a multi pattern choice at this price ... has anyone had a chance to try it.
And what are the other contenders ... CAD M179 etc ???
