Why not at least try daisy chaining the two channels of the MBox? Ya know, into channel one, out and back into channel two? I believe that would equal similar results to using an extrenal preamp first (a little better or a little worse....maybe equal) and it won't cost a cent.

You might also strongly consider an AT4033. Although not a favorite of mine for my voice, I understand a lot of rappers like it. It would lend itself well to the sound you're after IMO and at least worth a listen. It is big and round sounding with a bit of a an edgy rawness on many voices...
