Which mic should i use to get this sound?

Im trying to find a condenser mic that would give me a sound similar to 2Pac's music. A little grainy, rough sounding, kind of underground type? For a sample of the sound go to this link and play the song "Life Goes On".

My budget is anywhere up to $300, and the mic will be paired with a Studio Projects VTB-1. The mic will be used for rap vocals ONLY.

I think your best bet would be a sm7, though I doubt that's what he used.

isnt the sm7 a dynamic mic? im preferably looking for a condenser...

ADK Hamburg or Vienna, CAD M179, might even find a Shure 32 on the bay or somethng

thanks... i have already been looking at the hamburg and vienna so thats good... whats the real difference between these mics anyway?

also pretty much every tupac song has the vocals tracked twice, which is kind of a signature sound that he has.

Any particular reason why?

Ben

good question actually... I dont really know why i guess ive always just had this thing about using dynamic mics for recording purposes... kinda similar to the way some people do not like to buy from certain companies even though they have no experience with their products... that and ive just heard that condensers are much more detailed and suited for recording...

i just got a neg rep point from a guy saying the Sm7 is better than any condenser in my pricerange... is this true? if it is ill seriously look into the sm7... it seems pretty hard to find though...

EDIT: Anyone know where i can get soundclip for this mic?

That grainy and rough sounding character is Pac's voice, not the mic. That sounds like a real good mic that he used too, don't be under the misconception that just because it sounds "underground" it wasnt recorded with a high end mic.

so would you suggest an sm7? So far im looking at all these mics to use with my VTB-1:

Studio Projects C1
ADK Hamburg/Vienna
SE Electronics SE2200A
SM7

I just read that when going through a low-end mic pre it is better to use a condenser than a dynamic because it will produce less noise and is more predictable.

You might also strongly consider an AT4033.

Although not a favorite of mine for my voice, I understand a lot of rappers like it.
It would lend itself well to the sound you're after IMO and at least worth a listen. It is big and round sounding with a bit of a an edgy rawness on many voices.

Now, if you said you wanted a really smooth sound or a nicely bright and airy sound, I'd say look elsewhere.

Also, you can find them in may stores to take a listen to.
