Ive researched a bit on these two mics, but cant decide which to get. I need a mic that will be used ONLY for rap vocals, and I have a fairly low voice. I read that the C1 works well with deep voices, but I was just wondering how it will perform for rap vocals. Is it bright at all? Any advice is appreciated...

The 4040 is flat and will give you some clarity. THe C1 is a little hyped in the high end and is a little more 'colored'. I have both, and I prefer my NTK to either for vocals! If I had to choose one I'd likely pick the C1 cause it's not flat, but that's how my voice works, but both of these mics are good for what you're doing, and I suggest you try them out side by side before you buy either and see what your ears tell you to buy! If you can't...well...maybe you'll just have to pick one and see! I have a C1 and some other little bits of gear for sale if you're interested...

I think Jacob summed it up nicely.

Another thing, I think the C1 takes better mic technique. IOW, you may not be able to just slam right into it wihtout sibilence problems.

However, why just those two mics?
Although I don't particularly like it on my voice, I hear a lot of guys like the AT4033 for rap. It isn't neutral like the AT4040, which I like better in general, but it is big and round. It has a graininess to it that I could see working well with rap or metal vocals. To summ it up, it's kinda big and brash sounding.

You could certainly find a music store with the AT mics. You should try them out.

FWIW, you might be able to buy a C1 and an AT4033, especially if you find them used like Jacob's C1 (although I don't know him).

I have a strong mid-frequency tone to my voice naturally, so the ATs don't flatter my tone. However, that aside, I still think they may be a bit accentuated in the mid frequency. That's what I hear, anyway.

I like the C1, but I always use it with the foam sock, which I think helps with the sibilance issue.

4040, better all around, C1 sits nice in a dense mix tho

ok thanks for the input guys...

also... I just wanted to give a nice shoutout to the coward who gave me a neg rep point for posting this thread and didnt leave his name. Apparently, someone has doesnt like the C1 so they gave me a neg rep point... fuck you asshole...
