Zoom R16 track assignment

I recently acquired a Zoom R16 to use for multitrack recording, replacing my Tascam DP008.
Advantage of the Zoom R16 is that more than two instruments (8 actually) can be recorded on their own track simultaneously (two on the DP008). However, advantage of the Tascam DP008 is that you can freely assign any of the two inputs to any of the 8 tracks, without physically replugging jacks.

My question is: Can I assign an input to a track different from its default track on the Zoom R16? Could I e.g. leave my guitar plugged in input 1 and have the sound recorded on track 2 (file 2)?

thanks for any advice

You can't assign an input to any track. The work around is to copy the recorded track to a new destination. It's in the manual .
Granted it's not an elegant solution, it does allow you to use things like a condenser for tracks without phantom powe.

Also, you still have the second bank, so record to track with the high Z .but upper group then move it

Thanks for these tips! I found a similar workaround myself: the SWAP function.

Thanks for your help! Did you see my other question? How to activate reverb.

Sorry, I didn't see the other post. I was on vacation last week, only now getting caught up. I'll check out that post now. Working from a tablet, I didn't have the manual available so I couldn't remember what the exact term was. SWAP is the right one. That does it immediately. The other option is to BOUNCE, but that is a real time mix down function so if you have a 4 minute song, it takes 4 minutes to do the entire process.

Bounce it what we used to do with old 4 track machines, where you could record 3 tracks, and bounce a submix of those to track 4, giving you 3 clean tracks to work with.
