I wrote this last night; played some drums for it and mixed it this evening. I had a fun time with this one. About imperfect people in imperfect relationships that are trying and aren’t that good at showing gratitude.

Feedback is always appreciated, thanks!

Stupid Ways

I’d do anything at all
I’d even take the fall
For all things you broke and took away from me
I’d do anything at all

Take the time to see
Why the sky is turning dark
and why they’re all turning on me

You were so kind
I won’t forget it
Pay you back in stupid ways…

Interesting mix of Wire - Weaser - and The Cure - to my ears - has a very 80s updated feel to the song - while the singing is good - the songs needs more power in the vocals IMO - and the Harmony parts are missing the middle to me - and the Stupid Ways Chorus Harmony should be different than the ‘You Were So Kind’ part - it would set the hook on it IMO.

it sounds great and I like the song!. 1:50 (especially entry to the word ways) area vocals could use tightening and or pitch correction but it is punk rock maybe you dont' care. Drums sound good but are over compressed a bit even for this genre. Mix sounds really close. Are guitars direct? cause there is an element of that di sound.

Thanks for the analysis! I did a little pitch correction on the lead vocal in a few spots that stood out to me but trying to keep it transparent. No pitch correction on any of the backups. There is also a lead vocal double that has no pitch correction as well. I’ll go back and try to listen for any trouble spots. I’ll listen again to 1:50…thanks!

I did DI for all the guitars, which I can get to sound pretty natural, but this time I went a little “buzzier” with some of the tones because it sounded kinda cool to me. Especially with that last solo..the lead is double tracked with one more natural and the other buzzy, each panned away from each other a little off center. it definitely screams “DI” which I wasn’t trying to hide on this one. I have a wall of nice amps, but it was late so silent recording with DI was the only way to go!

Thanks, I’ll have to think about that!
I like Weezer, love LOVE the Cure, and never heard of Wire. I’ll check them out!

yah replace those guitars with mic'd loud on the verge of feedback pushing air asap. The di plastic sound is there. I think if you polish the vocals a bit more make the drums less compressed and put in real guitars you have a banger

Immediacy is great. Those fast jams are always the best. I didn't notice the DI guitars, they sound good. Retro feel is all over this, the post punk era, you've nailed it. Nice job

Awesome, thanks!
Yeah, guitar tones are so subjective. I usually don’t go so fizzy but I thought it kinda worked on this one.

Dig it. That is excellent.

I am amazed that you just wrote and recorded that in so little time. Incredible
