After updates are downloaded, and the installation begins, do I need to maintain an internet connection, or will the installations continue without?

Previously, my Win 10 PC had a constant internet connection and all auto updates took place in the wee morning hours while I slept. Never a problem.

Now that my PCs are connected only when I use my phone's hotspot, my updates are manually instigated.

So today's round of updates took about 3 hours - 45 min for the Win 11 laptop and 2 hours for the Win 10 desktop
. Downloading went relatively fast, but the installations took up around 90% of those times, especially the Win 10 system. I know this isn't unusual, it's just the first time in many years I've done this manually, having to watch and wait during my waking hours.

So getting back to the opening question . . The installations took forever and I'm wanting to find out if I can disconnect my hotspot phone when they begin, so I can go about my business with phone in hand.

Yes. The updates install in batches depending on your configuration, so the big update downloads, then installs. Then it checks that you have the right drivers, grabs the updates its needs. Doing it through your phone seems a bit unusual. Mine are connected when powered up, but even the. After being on for a couple of days, when i do go to switch off, i get the little yellow dot signifying it needs to update yet again.

I discontinued my ethernet (cable modem) service - using my phone's hotspot and it's working great. I see all updates are downloaded first, then they begin installing. I was wondering if I need to maintain the internet connection during the installations, or is the PC done with the connection after all downloads are completed. I guess next month I'll just disconnect after downloads and see how it goes.

IME it depends on the update. I have turned of the wifi after download and either no problem or I get a message later that an installation wasn't completed. I would not worry if you have to disconnect after download. Heck, most of the time the update doesn't even install until AFTER restart anyway.

I got my first windows 11 computer and it took 40 minutes on my fairly quick internet to download and install. I guess gto has a point, you get prompts when the internet is down, or just slow, so at least you know.

If it is not too much of a swerve...can I ask if anyone here has upgraded a PC from W7 to W10 in the last year?

I have a fairly swift, 3G 6 core AMD Black, desktop that I would like to put ten on (cannot see it being 11 capable?) The internet seems very divided about this from, "NO! The free upgrade is no more" to "Yes! Walk in the park".

Also! What is a "quick" download connection please? I get a very consistent 30 mbs.

I did it on an old 2nd gen Core I3 ASUS laptop about 2 years ago. Worked perfectly fine. I was thinking of getting a cheap 500GB SSD and trying Win 11 as a test bed. Clone the drive and do the install workaround that is available. It's worth the $40 to at least try. It might give me 10 more years ouf of that old workhorse.

Heh! I have a 4 core i3 HP laptop running W7 and I go on the net with it quite regularly. It runs the demo tracks in Samplitude ProX 3 well enough* so I shan't be messing with that!

The desktop is another can of herrings. I turned it on a few days ago after about 9months idle. All sorts of "Insert correct boot media" **** but I made a boot disc on the HP and with a pukkah W7 64 disc got it to run...THEN cacking Msoft told me the OS was illegal! I paid over 100 quid for the 64&32 bit set years ago.
Since discovered that the CR 2032 had gone down to 0.03V! And so far boot ups do not tell me I am a criminal anymore.

Butty, but but...Win 7 IS very old and I would like to get ten on it if possible and not TOO costly ('king gvmnt is robbing me of £300 in November!)

SSD? Hmm, I recall that W10 likes and expects an SSD? The PC has a 1TB spinner in it but a 240G SSD might be an idea and put W10 on that. But how to proceed?

*Much of that excellent performance is due I think to the superb M4 drivers and the NI KA6 before that.

It all depends if the Download competes before install - som of them do - some of them do it real time - there is no way of knowing what is up until you see it.
