Talk about room reflections . . .

I know this is far from a home studio. I just tripped across this place in my morning meanderings - The Power Station Berklee NYC. Around here, we have lots of talk concerning reflections in small rooms and taming them with various panels, bogos, carpeting, tile, etc. When I saw this pic of the studio, I just thought WOW! Not a lick of sound absorbing materials on the walls and ceiling. A few throw rugs are used in this one pic, but I wonder if they're just to accommodate the artists.

I'm thinking something here on the forums isn't working quite right. They've been operating in unusual ways recently. Sometimes when I come here, logged in or not, no pics are visible. Some days only half the pics are visible. When I'm not logged in, most videos don't play - appear as static image. Many times either no or some avatars are visible. Been this way for awhile.

I see all of the pics.

Looks like a great place to track! A total shit storm for mixing in however.

I am sure the control room doesn't look like this..

Unless a smaller space like most of us home guys have, I don't really see a bunch of absorption needed for a large tracking room. And this one is huge.

When you want the room in there, you have it. Still close micing gets what you need if the room isn't in the needs of a track.

That is why drums can be tough in a small space. You can't get/record that big natural space. Especially for the overhead mics.

In a small room, the sound reflects off the ceiling before it had a chance to open up. It makes it feel and sound 'constrained'? I think I just made up another word that is similar to 'warm' or 'thin'. LOL!

As far as I know,. there are no server issues here today.

I got your pix. Maybe it was just a bad day?

Hard to say. I've been experiencing this for a couple months at least - off and on. Something happened around here a while back which resulted in YouTube vids displaying as static images with no Play arrow. . . until I logged in, then they all appeared normally with no difficulty in playing. However, there were some YouTubes that displayed and played normally before I signed in. Then some static pics began disappearing leaving that little green icon behind. This past week has progressed to missing avatars - usually about half of them and sometimes all of them.

I can see the pics now. Cool room. I'm definitely no expert but looking at all of the wood, angled walls, and uneven surfaces tell me they are controlling the reflections and not removing them. I remember being in a studio once that was totally dead and I didn't like it.

Yeah. The basement live room I helped build in our guitarist's townhome for our practice sessions was so well insulated it would have made a terrible mix room. The only reverb came from a Fender Twin - nothing on vocals. Pretty dry.

What a fantastic room!

Isn't it !? I like looking at old pics of big studios from the 50's & 60's when Frank, Aretha and other singers would record in a room with an orchestra - basically just a big room with lots of open, uninsulated space. The close proximity in the recorded vocals is awesome.
Would love to be able to try something like that out.

It's witchcraft, ? I tell you ! ?‍♀️
Then again, it could be the Twilight Zone ?......or the Matrix ??.

Event Horizon ??
I bet not many people can name which song by Bruce Cockburn contains the phrase "Event Horizon" !
Free permanent residency in North Korea for the winner !!

I had the opportunity, and the pleasure, of playing several times in the Hatch Memorial shell in Boston when I lived there.
It's surprisingly small. It is also a work of art in terms of the woodworking craftsmanship within. Absolutely stunning work. Dressing rooms suck.
Acoustically, it is a dream. You would think that with all that wood it would be a nightmare, but it isn't. There is not a 90 degree angle to be found anywhere. Every angle, (including the woodwork) is oblique.
Beautiful in so many ways.
It was a privilege.

Ceilings are high enough - and the walls are offset - what’s not to love - you have to deal with it being a live room - which I like - YMMV.

Wow that is huge looking! Would love to hear a recording from that room.
