To me, it sounds fucking amazing, because I know what an amp sounds like in a room. I think it sounds superb. You don't. I'm making realistic allowances for the quality of the recording based on my experience of what amps normally sound like under these recording conditions.
Sorry .... you're not gonna get me to budge.
We're not talking about what we know it must sound like in that room ..... we're talking about the clip.

The clip doesn't sound amazing .... of course the amp sounds amazing ..... it prolly sounds amazing right there in that room .... I don't really agree that the player is that good either although he's aight .... but that's an amazing amp for sure ..... but the freakin' clip is not good ... you would NEVER use that clip in a mix.

LOL ....... I know what you're saying and and I have a full understanding of 'room' sound and such.

But every single clip greg does sounds worlds better than that.

Who the hell is going to use that clip in a mix? CTFD, Boob. It sounds awesome for a youtube clip. That's all we're saying.

and I'm saying I don't agree .... I've heard LOTS of youtube clips that sound better.

But to each his own .....

I know you've got some good gear and you gig it .... I'd like to hear some clips of your stuff.

Well, LT. I'm a punk rocker, plain and simple. That chap's tone wouldn't work for what I do, and it's moot whether 90% of the tone freaks in the world would even consider my sounds to be decent. One of the best recorded sounds I did recently was with a Vox AC15. That was a great amp. I still admire the obscenely good sounds on that YT clip, though.

If I pull my finger out tomorrow, I'll put a few JVM tones up. I'm on holiday so I don't have much excuse not to! Besides, I'm working on a track so it will be an ideal opportunity.

They're the same as the heads. How much?

He's got it listed for $1300, which I think is just a little high myself. I haven't saw any gut-shots though, so dunno about that. But again, it may be just a little high...

It's a lot high because it's worthless as a combo and not a real head. Real JCM 800 heads hang around that price range. It's foolish to ask that much for an oddity that no one really asked for. It is a JCM 800, sure, but it's lost pretty much all of it's resale or vintage value. You have to just really really want a JCM 800 with no concern for resale value to buy that thing.

I'm gonna try a mega-roomy clip with my stack in the front entryway to see if it sounds the same-ish.

Yeah, I saw a couple/few heads on there that looked like they were in pretty good shape, & like you said, they're the real deal. It would be cool to have an amp like that conversion, but not for $1300. I might give that much for an original head in great shape, but not that particular amp. If I were to buy that amp. I might give around $900 or so for it, but I'd have to see a lot more of it than what he's got in the ad...

I would say the re-sale value doesn't matter to me, but after the past year or so, I'm not gonna be so quick about that especially after 2015...

I just want an original, un-modded, 2 input, 50w JCM800. That might be a tall order to fill, but eventually, I'm pretty confident I'll find the right one to fill it. Then, that part of my quest would be over...And I could move onto another one...:D.

I'd like to hear 'em.
Punk tones are often pretty interesting tones. I like an amp just being raw and in your face.
Plus it's all about being the right tone for what the tunage is.

I haven't ever used an AC15 ...... I'd like to sometime.

I still can't believe that I just bumped right into one at my local small-time Guitar Center. That shop is brand new and really close to me. It had been open less than a month when I wandered in to buy an insert cable. I basically live in suburbia, with no music scene or actual culture. So that GC has to cater to teenagers buying their first Affinity Strat and Line6 amp, and not so much to gigging musicians buying serious gear. I didn't even really know what that amp was when I saw it. It wasn't until I spent an evening googling and chatting with you guys that I realized what it was, and I showed up the next morning to bring it home with me.

Be patient, keep your eyes open, and only strike when the moment is right. Given enough time, the right one will come along. The gear email alert on Reverb has treated me well..tell it what you're looking for and your price range and it'll send you an email when something is added that fits your bill. I got a couple of Distressors for great prices that way. It just took a few months of waiting for the right ones to come along...

kewl :D will be good to hear a decent mic against that $1 horrid sounding thing used in that vid :)

looking forward to it :D

also would be cool if you could do a clip with the room test mixed with your normal setup :)

Lt Bob, a few months back we had a very short exchange about a Kustom 72 Coupe I recently picked up. This is it in clean mode with a Strat. VERY Fender sounding to me.

gents,
any opinions on a lightly used Epiphone SG G400 Korean made for AUS$180 - US$136?

I think those are pretty good guitars. Set neck, decent pickups, Epi stepped their game up on those G400s in my opinion. And that's a real good price for one of the best Epi SGs they made. Suspiciously good. Got any pics of it?

I've recorded guitars out in the foyer before. My entryway is not huge like a southern plantation, but you come in the front door and the ceiling goes all the way to the upstairs. There's a little railing upstairs that you can lean over and look down into the entryway. And then it goes into a long hallway. I've put a mic down that hallway and hung mics from the upstairs railing. Both ways sounds super roomy. I just rarely go for that big room sound. I like my guitars dry and punching you in the face. It's been years since I rolled the cabs out there. I've probably recorded drums out there more than guitars.

Here're the ones available Greg.

This has been on my local craigslist for months.
Marshall 800 50W Combo - (Willis)

That is a proper 50w JCM 800 combo. He can't sell it for $1200. I've watched this poor amp linger unwanted for a long time. He's asking too much. If it were an original JCM 800 2204 head from 1984 at that price it wouldn't last a day on CL. People that want JCM 800s don't want them as combos. But since you're not gonna gig it, something like this could be an awesome option because it is the same amp as the head, and you can plug it into your cab, bypassing the combo speakers. This preserves whatever resale value it has. Hacking one into a head version is just crazy to me. And hell, it might have good speakers in it.

Looks pretty good! Grover tuners? That's nice if that's what they are. No pic of the neck joint. My worry is that it could be a bolt-on neck, which isn't really a bad thing, but SGs are supposed to be set-neck guitars. SG400s are set-neck, but just make sure. If you're really interested, try to get more pics from the seller. At that price, you could be getting a really nice guitar.
