Heh... I bought my instruments a year ago, not long before I got my mixer, so I feel that "I didn't know any better" by plugging directly into the machine for the first few months. The emulated effects sounds provided by the mixer (when speaking of an electric guitar) suck compared to using an amp.
I have a peavey vypryr 2 amp that I can use for both guitar and bass, and has built-in effects. The trouble is finding them... there are a shitload of combinations to try for tones and I never rememeber the ones I like.
