Hi guys,
I did a recording on a Tascam 388 a few months ago and it sounded great listening back. But now when I play the tape, you can hear all of the tracks on each individually track. They used to be almost totally isolated. Also the tone is pretty weird now. This is only on one tape, the others are fine.
I used RMGI 1/4". Anyone know what could have happened and what could do to fix it?
Thanks

HUH...?

Individual = isolated

Explain it better.

Ok, I used to have 4 isolated tracks, now each of those 4 tracks are nearly I dentical to each other

What does that mean...."nearly identical"...?

So did all four tracks end up mixed together, and now the mix is on every track....or is it something else...?

Tape issues will not make the tracks move around or mix them together.
Are you sure you didn't do any bouncing of the tracks yourslef?

Yeah you're right, it's all mixed together. Didn't do any bouncing or overdubbing

You should have posted this in the Anlaog forum, as there are a few people there that use the 388, and maybe one of them has a better clue about what could have happened (maybe one of the mods can move this thread).....
....but from my perspective, and being a regular tape user for many, many years (2, 4, 16, 24 track decks)....the only way 4 tracks can get mixed together and then recorded 4 times to replacing the original individual tracks, would be with a user-perfromed event.
There's no conceivable way that I'm aware of or have ever heard of where tracks just mix themselves down and record over the existing material....or that some machine/tape malfucntion could cause that.

You may want to reconsider what you did....maybe you grabbed the wrong tape and recorded over the tracks....or accidentally did a mix/bounce....or...???

Hmm maybe the drummer tried to do some overdubs while I was away, thiugh he says he didn't.
The plot thickens.....

I thought it might be something to do with magnetization?

Thanks for trying to help me out guys

Oh....you didn't mentioned that there was a drummer involved.

That explains everything! :D

NOT a DRUMMER !!!
Oh, the HORROR!
We always seem to do the wrong thing with buttons...shiny buttons......... pretty, twisty buttons...................
