AUDIOBOX USB Hummmmmm

Brand new as in I bought it almost a year ago and just now getting around to using it so it has very little time on it.

All,
I appreciate all your input and ideas. I think we are getting to if not a solution, a work around. Given my investment in the AudioBox USB and that is an acceptable position.

Last night working with the rig I was able to minimize the hum level where from where I was sitting came across as more of a ringing in the ear at a different frequency. While I would like to have it gone completely, I am comfortable that I have managed to adjust the numerous points in the chain to drive down the hum while leveraging the guitar and vocal inputs.

You might know the 'Stupid Deal' of the day on MF is a "TASCAM US-144MKII USB 2.0 4-channel Audio/MIDI Interface" for $50 and my music gear budget is wiped out from the purchase of the Harmony-G XT. But it will go on sale again some time or something better will.

In the mean time I can focus on learning how to utilize the Harmony-G XT to a greater degree and get busy laying down some tracks which is what the end goal has been all along. I may invest in the hum destroyer or I may just live with this until I can upgrade the audio interface down the road.

Much thanks for your input and great getting to know you folks though this discussion!

Regards,
Kip...

Ok, well I just bought the US-144MKII for you. PM me your address and I will ship it to you so you can at least determine if your interface is fooked.

If you like it, then pay me whenever. If not send it back. I can surely get my money back or give it to a friend. :D

Process of elimination is a real pain when isolating hum. Could there be some RF leaking in from the PC? Have you tried plugging some gear into another outlet (mains)?

"ALMOST a year ago"!! I do not know the consumer laws at your 10/20 Kip but over here you have at least 12 months no quibble. Then, what have you got to lose but a bit of shipping cost? The retailer should at least be able to test the AI and give you a report or send it to the manufacturers for same.

I strongly suspect the fault is in that AI. Do NOT throw good money after bad on a "hum destroyer" such things should never be needed (decent iso traffs, different ball game) . If I were in your position I would bother the arse off the retailer and/ or mnfctr until I got a result and if not spend the rest of my days bad mouthing them on every forum I could find!

Jimmy. WHAT! A lovely chap you are!
Jim! Reading that on't forum it looked sarkey. I assure you it was not intended so!

I just roll like that. :)

I am really just curious to try out the interface myself for comparison. Dood seems like he has his head on straight. $50 is nothing that hurts me financially, and I have done this before. Worst case scenario, I lose $50 and learn something. I have wasted $50 on a stripper pole many times years ago. This sounded much more fun. Well....

I lost $70 at the horse track a couple of months ago, never thought anything about it. Good perspective big Jim. Keeping it real.

Ok, I just tested the Tascam US-144MKII. I am surprised how clean and able the mic preamp was with a SM7B.

Sending out to Kip C tomorrow.

:)

Thanks Jimmy... I am really looking forward to seeing if it knocks out the hum. Can't always tell by pictures but it looked like quite a bit more substantial rig in the online shots than the Audiobox was. I'm not sure how Presonus's higher end mixers and such stack up but after my experience with the AudioBox USB i'd be gun shy to pull the trigger on any more purchases of their rigs. I'm hoping I hear from others that this was a isolated case. Even the best of gear can have issues, so might be just my inexperience not picking up on the problem early enough to use the warranty or return policy.

I'll report back soon as I have results to report!

Kip...

Yes it was said that they improved the mic pre on the Mk2. I have only had a Mk1 thru my hands. Wasn't bad but a bit gain shy.
Tascam interfaces all seem to get a good rep' for reliability and stable drivers.

Sent the interface out this afternoon. Should see it this Sat. Hope it at least helps to determine the issue.

If not, I can send ya the $10 to send it back. I already have a taker if it not the one for you. :)

I'm betting that I like it and will just be reimbursing you for it! Proof will be in the pudding but got that gut feeling that this is gonna work.

Let you know soon! Thanks much!

Nice job Jimmy! You really are some guy.

Hopefully it works out for you Kip. I suspect you just got unlucky.
Obviously there's good and bad in everything, but I've had great success out of a few presonus interfaces.

Keeping an eye to see how you get on.

Cool man. No rush to make payment either if it works out for you. Just be sure to let us know how it fares for ya. I just hope you get to recording before the good years of your creativity pass! lol! :)

It also comes with Cubase LE5. So you will also have another DAW to try if you care to. I could help you there.

No sign of it yet Jimmy.... will be sure to hollar when I catch sight of it.... maybe I should have a walkabout to be sure UPS didn't drop it off somewhere other than the front door.
:)
