Thanks man. The JVM's Clean Green is pretty sparkly clean, but even set to it's cleanest, it will break up a tiny but if you dig in and pick hard. Nothing major, but I hear a hint of crunch when you bear down on it with the LP in humbucker mode. Splitting the pickup takes that out of it. It stays clean. I'll try some stuff with some reverb today.
The way you describe the JVM's cleann green channel, sounds a lot like my 'lil DSL....It's fairly clean, until you dig in & pick hard, which I kinda like....Cool on the 'verb dude, looking forward to hearing what you come up with....
I've noticed on a lot of albums/guitar sounds lately, there's more 'verb than what one would think, even Angus & the boys have quite a bit of 'verb on their guitars....Of course, I know it's probably room mics (in a great room, with a great engineer at the controls), but still, lots of 'verb....Listen to the "For Those About To Rock" with 'phones on, just as an example....
Ace is a big influence on me too. When I decided that I need to learn some basic lead kind of stuff and branched out an about inch from my usual powerchord nonsense, Ace was the guy I turned to. I only have a small handful of guitar players that I like well enough to call them an "influence". Johnny Ramone, Johnny Thunders, Angus and Ace. The Johnnys were awesome to listen to, but Johnny Ramone played no leads whatsoever, and Johnny Thunders' leads were cool but too basic even for me. Angus is awesome as well, but I can't figure out what he's doing and plays too fast for me to follow. That left Ace. His leads were attainable. I could listen to an Ace solo in the days before tabs and figure it out on my own. That was plenty enough for me. Lol. All of my leads now do sound the same though. I have no lead guitar vocabulary. I'd like to be a better lead player, I just don't know how to get there. I don't really like his music, but Slash is probably the kind of lead player I'd like to be if possible. I think his leads are impressive enough for the layman, impressive enough for me, but they don't go into full-on shred wanker territory. They're melodic and he doesn't use an assload of effects. And I like his riffs. I just don't like anything he's done after "Appetite".
Greg:
Ace & Angus were my first guitar heroes, way back when....I too went the same route as you did, but after I got a little better, I used to sit & learn all kinds of shit...The neo-classical thing just wasn't for me to be honest though, while it's awesome just to listen & imagine how much practice it took to get that shit down, IMO, most of the songs sucked with that kind of playing in 'em....While I've got all kinds of infuences, I'd say one of my biggest influences was Mark Kendall of Great White....he kept the blues thing going (which I got into heavily as a teenager), but with a modern twist....and, most of the stuff he did, fit the song, instead of mindless noodling/shredding (which again, is awesome to listen to just as a guitar player)....
Slash is another guy who I like, but only some of his stuff...He keeps the blues thing going, but with a modern twist too...His album/cd "Slash" (with all the guest singers/players) is actually a pretty good album, IMO....I loved Appetite, saw that concert my senior year in high school (at the beginning of the school year), & nobody knew who they were...by the time I graduated the next spring, they were the biggest band in the world...LOL...His studio & live playing are very, very different though, IMO, he's pretty sloppy live....
I could type all day on guitar players that I like, but here's a short list off the top of my head:
Angus Young
Ace Frehley
Mark Kendall
Frank Hannon (Tesla)
Eddie Van Halen (I really never learned much of his stuff, but he inspired me to play at a young age)
Eric Clapton (^ like EVH, but an inspiration mainly because of the blues thing...)
Like I said, I could type all day about guitar players, but these are just off the top of my head, I'm sure I'll remember more after I post this...LOL...
Bob: I though I remembered that guitar ligting up, cool!!!!
