technics setup

hi guys, i recently purchased a technics sl1210 deck for home use, just to play vinyl. i have no intention of getting into djing or anything, and was just wondering what the best way is to set them up to enhance my listening experience. i own a pair of alesis mk2 speakers and then i purchased a behringer xenyx1002 mixer. only thing is, the sound isnt great, and its a little quiet. there is also a buzzing sound. i'm not sure if this is the setup with this particular mixer, or whether i need to get the deck looked at.

any help would be amazing.

aaah, thanks for the reply man. i've been looking into the preamps. will the preamp increase the volume? sorry again if this is a dumb question.

i looked into grounding the turntable. it has a ground wire, but how to i ground it to the mixer?

A phono preAMPLIFIER will amplify the cartridge's output to consumer line level and apply the necessary RIAA playback curve.

You ground the turntable to the preamp. You don't have to ground it to the mixer.

Here's what the RIAA playback curve looks like on two preamps I recently tested:

Not sure what to say about the ground as I don't know the gear you have or the power system (electric outlets) you're plugging into.

It's common practice (since the 50s?) to ground the turntable to the preamp. Turntables come with a grounding wire and preamps have lugs to connect them to, typically with a knurled or serrated thumb screw.

It's possible to hook it up all different ways. But if you want it to sound right you need and actual phono preamp with a grounding lug.

Search eBay for "Realistic 42-2101A" if you want something cheap. But look at the curves I posted above. The Realistic has more gain overall than my Onkyo receiver's built in preamp, but it drops off below 100Hz.

Behringer make a preamp Link. I bought one when my new home surround system came without a phono input. Sounds fine. If you want a really top line sounding phono pre you will need to spend more, however if it's being plugged into Behringer mixer anyway, the pre is going to not make much difference.
