lol ... teh gerg is the shitz when it comes to recording guitar and don't let his protestations of not being any good fool ya' ..... he has chops.
That was a very good tone man ...... I need that tone ...... I'm gonna have to get a closed back cab.
A 2x12 isn't much, if any, cheaper than used 4x12s, so yeah, get a halfstack! Keep in mind though that you just have GAS. Lol. The tones you're getting with your setup are very good. They work in a mix and you get good sounds. I hear ya though. I felt the same way. But yeah, I really think you'd love the JVM. It's so much amp! The flexibility and variety with this thing is just crazy......but it all sounds like a Marshall. The Satriani model is a buttrocking favorite too, but I'm not thrilled with it. It's "Crunch" channel is probably right in your wheelhouse as it's a little harier than the standard JVM's Crunch channel, but I think it's geared more for serious live players. It has 4 noise gates instead of 4 reverbs. The JS has two OD channels, and they're identical. That's really dumb to me. A lot of people mod their JVM to have two identical OD1 channels, and that too is dumb to me. The stock standard JVM has a better clean section, more authentic Crunch section, and the two OD channels are different. But either is a kick ass amp. I just think the regular JVM is more flexible.Cool tone Greg,
Man, you know, the more I listen you your clips, the more I want a fuckin' JVM.......I think that would hold me at bay for a while on my tones, as it seems to have pretty much everything covered, from spanky-type cleans, to downright dirty as fuck, & everything in between.....Gonna check around on some prices, & see how much it'll set me back with at least a 2x12 cab, but I might as well go with a 4x12, knowing I won't be totally happy until I get a half stack.....
I really like the guitar sounds of the buttrocking 70s/80s, but I hate the songs. I love the guitar tones of Eddie, Randy, George Lynch, Yngwie, and all the other teased hair spandex homos. I love the big dumb huge drum sounds of buttrock. I just fucking HATE the songs. They're unlistenable to me. I listened to all that hair shit before I started thinking about it. Van Halen, Ratt, Ozzy, Priest, all that stuff. But even as an 11 yr old kid I was getting really tired of the guitar solo and Waaaaaaaa vocals. I was a kid in the mid 80s, surrounded by hair and spandex, and I looked for better stuff. I'd listen to my dad's old records all the time. The Ventures was one band that I really liked, still do, without knowing anything about them. No vocals, and great guitar playing without all the flash and douchebaggery of hair rock. My friends were listening to Journey and Dokken, I listened to Jerry Lee Lewis the Beach Boys and Fats Domino. Lol. Then punk finally found me and fixed me up forever. One of the things that drew me into the Ramones sound was the blazing relentless unpretentious guitar. It never stopped. I didn't understand why the guitars sounded that way. I'd never heard anything like that. At the time the Ramones were already well established, but it was brand new to me. Totally different from all the corny buttrock that was prevalent at the time, but not as tame and timid as my dad's oldies. There was no riffing or chops. No leads. No twiddling or noodling. It was just cool melodic songs that sort of sounded like the oldies but with warped humor and a relentless rhythm section. And Johnny used Marshalls. On the VH tone thing, it is really hard to say what all he did to his gear, but IMO, it's a classic, timeless guitar sound, that I've loved since hearing their first album at the age of 7....I'm 42 now (will be 43 in November), & it just never gets old....to me....I know there are a lot of folks (like you Greg) that don't like the hair metal/80's rock sound, & it's cool, that's what makes us all different. But to me, that's what I grew up listening to, & it's just stuck with me all these years........
Thanks man. I appreciate that. I do okay for a dumb punk guitarist. As much as I love the sound and style of punk music, it probably has stunted me quite a bit as a musician. For as long as I've been playing, I think I should be WAY better on guitar and drums than I currently am. I'd really like to be better, but really, why bother? I'm as good as I need to be. I'm kind of in a rut. Not a bad rut, but where do I go from here? Nowhere. I don't know how to learn anything new. I don't know how to practice. I don't know any theory or techniques beyond the basic shit I already know. I just maintain what I have. Stylistically, if I had to choose a few guitar stars that I'd like to emulate, it would be Angus, Ace Frehley, and Slash. I like the way they play lead guitar. A little sloppy, mostly pretty basic, but they throw down cool licks that aren't guitar masturbation. I could incorporate their kinds of leads into my own stuff and it wouldn't out of place.....if only I could play like them. I just don't have the musical vocabulary. All of my leads end up sounding the same.Again, cool tone, I really wish you stop holding back on you chops though, I know you can fuckin' play when you want to, I've heard your songs dude, so you're really not fooling me at all.....OK, I'll stop with the VH tones for a while, I did get a little closer this morning before work, but won't bore you with it.....
Post up some different tones the JVM can do man when you get time....

I'll work on getting up some tones from the different channels and modes of my JVM. I love the amp, but some of it is unusable for me. For example, the red modes of the OD channels. They're so loaded with gain that I can't utilize them. I don't know how to. I'm not a metal guy by any means, so their potential is lost on me. I don't do drop tunings or thrash, so wtf am I supposed to do with that much gain? Lol. My "Eddie" clips done with OD1 Orange mode is about the most gain I'd ever use - and that's with the gain on like 2. This amp has a whole galaxy of gain available beyond that.
I think the JVM head would be the most expensive (obviously), I could find a cab used, but to be honest, I'm really not too keen on buying used gear, unless it has some kind of warrany. A person really doesn't know what kind of abuse something's been through, & I take care of my shit, I'm actually really picky about my gear. Don't want anyone fuckin' with my stuff....period...
Yeah, GAS has hit again, I think I'll start saving again, & just hold off until I get the biggest part saved up, then go shopping....
Another amp that's caught my eye is the full sized DSL. While the DSL-1 is great & all, it doesn't have the different modes/buttons (green crunch comes to mind)...
Again, I'm just gonna start saving up & take it from there...You're right, I do get pretty decent tones from my stuff, hell, I've even learned how to tweak my ampsims to sound a lot better in the last little while, so it's not like I can't get decent sounds, I just want 'em to be...better...
On the playing thing, man, I used to have some pretty decent chops (or thought I did), but I actually stopped playing for about 7 years, didn't even pick a guitar up at all. Got back into it about 5 years ago, & I'm kinda like you, I'm as good as I need to be right now, but I do wanna get back in the "swing" like I once was, but time kills me. The shift I work fucks my whole world up, by the time I get up, it's time to go to work......like now, I've got about 30 mins & have to head out the door.....
As for the shared EQ thing ..... I only see that as a problem for live use. Recording it's no biggie to change the EQ knobs for each sound .... not as easy to do when gigging.
That's because the cave is slow, and you're a cave troll, so you've migrated out here. Besides, you don't actually write in haiku. Not any consistent kind of haiku anyway. Just writing three lines isn't haiku. Here's some basic haiku for you:you guys write alot of words

Oh yeah guys, by all means, if I can find a deal on a used amp, & save some $$$, that's the ticket there....I looked at a new JVM410 & 4x12 cab (GT75's btw, I'd prefer Greenbacks, so that's gonna cost a little more I'd say...), & the rig was about $3200....
But, like you mentioned Guitar Center's used stuff would probably be my best bet, & will most likely go with 'em whenever I do get enough saved up for my "big" amp......
On the DSL-1 H, it's a 2 channel amp (Ultra-Gain (red), & Classic Gain (green)), but there's no crunch button on the green channel, & IIRC, the big DSL's have a crunch/lead 2 button on the red channel, mine's just a 2 channel, shared-eq amp. But, for what it is, it does sound great (IMO anyway), blows the Tweaker completely away (except for volume/loudness & the Fender-y tones the T15 has, on the Marshall-y/Brit tones, there's no comparison at all....)...Between those 2 amps, & the shitload of ampsims/modelers I have, I can still record to my heart's content & still get pretty good tones (IMO anyway) until I do get the "big" amp...(and yes, I've spent enough on ampsims over the past 4-5 years to buy a really nice tube amp, cab, & a few mics).....A shared eq (like the DSL100/50 watter) wouldn't really matter to me, as I'm pretty sure my band days are over, but, really, you never know. The last time I had a gig was New Year's Eve 2001. Slim to none chances on the band/gig thing really, I honestly don't have the time (work), & I really got sick & tired of all the bullshit we put up with (drunks, ignorant/stupid people in general) while maybe making $100 a weekend for 2 nights (4-45 minute sets, Friday & Saturday, usually an hour drive one way, not counting loading/unloading, setting up, soundcheck, tearing down, loading the gear back up....)...
My hat's off to you Bob, for having enough patience to deal with the public the way you do....I did that shit for years, but don't think I could do it anymore, guess I'm getting older, & just can't tolerate shit like I used to....ask the guys I work with...
Anyway, gonna go grab a bite to eat, I did work on the VH tone a little more today, & I'm getting closer. To be honest, I think the reverb sound on that record has as much to do with his sound as the amp does....FWIW, I've ended up using the stock Reaper 'verb, some eq, & compressing the shit out of it, & it's a lot closer than it was, on the reverb anyway.....I'm still undecided about the actual amp/guitar tone, I'll fire up the daw after I eat & see if I'm any closer with a fresh set of ears...I won't bother you guys with the VH tone though, might post up some stuff just for shits-n-giggles though, just to keep the thread alive & kickin'....
Thanks for taking the time to help me out on the amp thing, it'll be a while before I'll be able to buy anything though, they cut our hours back at work, cut out our gas card, & now, it feels like I work for nothing really. I know I'm not the only one though, I'm actually pretty lucky to even have a job where I live, so I'm not gonna bitch too much....
See you guys in a while, if I don't pass out on the couch again....![]()
