Tears And Mascara - the first post-Jongleurs Jongleurs song...

Ok, so you're like a midi drum programming master. Very impressive. Does sound better than I remembered but still not loving it. Maybe the problem I'm having is the reverb on the snare sample. It just sounds like it was recorded from a distance in a small room which might be fine in the right context but everything else has a nice ambience so it just doesn't fit. What samples and software are you using? Like the kick. cymbals are nice too if maybe a bit washed out but great for samples which usually their weakest spot.

It's Addictive Drums and I'm using their Sonor designer snare which sucks less than the others... still definitely work to do, I know exactly what you mean, but wrangling with the software to get it right is difficult.. most of the sound comes via the "overhead" and "room" rather than the snare channel itself, which tends never to work well on its own, so it's always a balance. There's something about the overall tone that I'm not in love with either, I've had better luck in other songs, but this one, same settings, not quite working. Can't quite put my finger or mouse on the things to change though. I may have to rebuild the tone from scratch.

I'm going to play with it some more, but not today... I'm getting eyestrain from peering at MIDI controls, and I think I've heard it too much. Sounds OK if you're in the next room, but not so much if you're in the same room..

Usually takes me a week of tweaking to get a mix how I like it, can't see that this one's going to be any different. :)

Hey! I like it...good yob myan!...Yeah you have a damn nice voice.... good gitars....

it would be nice to do a versions where you used a tambourine and some real drums...in leiu of the fake stuff but they are adequate..just fake....

you could totally pull off Cat Stevens.....and he got rich with his voice...and great songs...then he became a Muslim..

You're not going Muslim on us r ya? Bottom line dude you ROCK! in an Aussie kind of way....:guitar:

Oh yeah if you were to try and get this mainstream just an FYI...we goofy Americans say Mascara like Scare ..i.e. dude you scare me... You are saying it like scar i.e. dude that is one nasty looking scar

beautiful song. great vocal work.. however way you did them :)

There were times when the vox jumped out and times when they sat back. I don't think this is a "set the faders once and let it roll" kind of song. I think you'll be riding the faders and I can see how all the finer details will take you a week to sort out. 9 guitars tracks?? sheesh... :D

Like you and everyone else, the snare doesn't work for me. It is simply the wrong snare. I did a song not too long ago with the ezdrummer Americana pack and that snare is very dark and flat. I wonder how it would work on your song.

I didn't even notice the 3/4 time until I read Heat's post. It's so very subtle and really cool how the time sig didn't jump out at me. That just made the song all that much better.

Thanks Chili.. glad you like it. :)

That might be the way to go... swap the snare for a different one... I've been spending ages tweaking this one but I just can't get it to sit right. I'll give it a go... but not today!

And I've already got the edit points on the lead vocal, just a matter of evening it out a bit more... I left a few phrases popping out a touch here and there... not hard to fix.. :thumbs up:

LOL... thanks for listening... you'll just have to put up with the Aussie accent on "mascara"... I doubt I'd get it right if i tried American... when Bieber covers the song I guess he'll get the accent right though... :thumbs up:

And no, not planning on turning to any religion any time soon. And I do do a good Father and Son cover, if I may say so myself... :laughings:

OK... new snare drum in place - used a bigger one, deeper sound, sitting better, I think... possibly it's a little quiet now but I kind of like it back in the mix a bit.

Still at the same link - Tears and Mascara

:)

there is nothing wrong with the kick. drums sound perfect. everything does.

lol that line about the tissue box came across as mean in the moment.

guitars sound really great. beautiful harmonies.

nice disarming tune

Armistice,
I prefer your voice - a little darker and melachonly which makes the wry humour all the better.
I love the sparkling arps = reminds me of Sounds Of Then - even more so when the delayed lead cames in.
The last three snare hist sound a little perfunctory - could do with a change of emphasis or timing.
VERY cool stuff compadre - I appreciate hearing you singing Australian too - it's something the country has been better at since Hunters & Collectors or Redgum but is becoming less common now the X Fracture & The Vnoise have become the standard bearers for musical development.

Nice. Much better. Just throwing this out there- I wonder how it would sound with more/different reverb on the snare. It still sounds like a different space from everything else. The cymbals match. The kick is ok I guess. Plus, I'd just like to hear more drums overall myself but I guess that could be a personal thing.

Yeah, this sounds better. The snare is a little softer and blends in better. Still sticks out more than I'd like personally, but not nearly so much as before. I think for me, the 3/4 time makes the task of creating humanized programmed drums even tougher. There's this kind of soft touch required with this rhythm that is super hard to replicate -more so than with a straight ahead beat.

Good tune, evokes emotion, empathy for Panda Girl. I like the mix, I like the layers, and the space. the drums are very well done, ( I don't have the patience to do midi drums), love the guitars, I agree with every one else, you have a nice voice, it fits this song, perfect.

Thanks Manslick! Mean? Me? Meant to be of the "I'm going to poke fun at you until you crack a smile" type of humour.... ;)

Hi Ray, thanks for the rap. :D

Yeah, I know what you mean about that ending.. think it needs something a bit better... will have a think about it. I still have some tweaking to do in a minor way, so I will be going back to it.

It's funny, I never think of myself as having an accent, until our overseas friends here comment on it - my spoken accent isn't exactly broad Aussie... I sometimes get mistaken for being English, even by English people... but yeah, we just pronounce some words differently and there are vowel sounds that we just do differently as well, so now it's been pointed out, I can hear it.

I never watch those talent shows... they just make me angry. All about the singer, never the song or the music... grrrrr.... :)

Yeah, I know what you mean... I was in "Swing" mode on a setting of 50% in 6/8 to get the right feel and then sometimes I'd have to switch back to straight mode to get a hit in the right place. In particular doing fills is hard... staying exactly "on" the prescribed beat doesn't sound realistic. I've been doing a bit of manual nudging here and there and will probably do a bit more...

I like this snare sound myself, I'll thank Chili for that advice, but I think there are places where I think it's just right and places where it's a little "stick out"ish and that's just a matter of going and paying attention to individual hits, which I'll get to later in the week. :D

Cheers

I didnt notice it either, I'm also used to the English pronunciation. No offense to American sounding people, but I think that the American pronunciation of Mascara wouldn't suit the song at all :p
