Here are some photos of my new space. I will probably take a hit right off for shoving my desk with monitors into that corner. This my personal project space as well as my bands rehearsal room, so I have set things up to try and be comfortable for everyone. I realize that having my monitors tucked in the corner like this is not optimal, but about half of what I do is through headphones so I decided to settle. I also am currently limited by cable length so it was convenient to have my drum-set/command center near the desk and mixers. Anyway, I am about to begin building panels and traps. I threw together a quick one by my desk already with stuff I had laying around, It's r-19 fibreglass packed in, just a test really. Any ideas or tips on my room and trap/panel building? Cieling is drywall, three walls are cinder block, other wall is cinderblocked that has wood paneling on it.

And where are all of the posters of Farrah Fawcett?

Besides the lava lamp, move the desk to where the acoustic guitar is sitting on its stand - middle of that wall, shouldn't affect your cable length issues too much.

Well...even though there's no Lava Lamp yet, it looks like a start.

Hi,

Assuming you've taken the above advice and bought the lamp...;)

You'll probably be using the room for a bunch of different things, and what may be a problem for one thing may be just fine for another, and so on. I need to treat my own space too, so this is pretty much my current advice to myself! It may be of use to you:

  • 1. Identify the problem(s) first. Any good engineer will spend some time accurately identifying and assessing a problem before they try to solve it. You may have several different problems that may not all be solved by the same answer either...

    2. Understand that if you still lack the experienced ears to hear what's wrong then you're unlikely to be able to tell when it's right either, so don't jump at treatments just because they look cool.

    3. Accept that most of us will only get part of the way there. Professionally treated rooms can cost a great deal of money, so we need to go for flexibility and bang for buck. The best way to get that is by doing a lot of research first. Getting experience by visiting other rooms and listening to the owners can help too.

    4. Read a few articles like these:

    Tweakz on Room Acoustics

Room Improvement at SOS (pack a lunch for reading this one.)

SOS (Sound on Sound) has a lot of articles on the topic, but they aim fairly high.

Good luck with it all.

Chris

You can never go wrong with some bass traps in the corners!

Umm, unless the corner traps are made of foam or dirty man underwear. I have heard that ladies wear makes a great trap. Not so sure about the bass tho.......

:D

Thanx. Great advice. I know i'm in for quite a bit of trial and error. I think I am going to tackle corners first and the make a couple of panels to try in different locations. I am going to use rock wool. I have about fifteen years of building experience and enjoy the process so I am looking forward to doing it. I won't be opposed to rebuilding if I don't think any first attempt is working. the materials are at least easy to work with and cheap enough that I can be flexible with ideas.

You are on the right track man. Rockwool is the most cost effective/performance benefiting material available. It does however, involve building a structure to frame it. Air gap behind the panels has a huge effect on performance. The fact that you have experience with building materials, has saved you hundreds in cost already. Just try to stay away from dirty undies. lol!

Ringo somehow ruined my Raquel buzz in that movie. She looked great in the poster, but she seemed overshadowed by a former Beatles nose, and drumming skills.

LOL!

JK!

Some of the best boobs ever!

:) Real is so much better than the alternative. Grim T will surely be around to give details! :D

First hands on experience?

Too much experience. Two failed marriages with strippers. Oh wait, 'adult entertainers'. Or was it 'dancer'?. A friend of mine actually got a pair. He lost a bet. He was surrounded by very well endowed women after the implants. I have always wondered who got what from who tho.......
